It is not problem with old parts if you don't have drivers for windows vista or seven.

Just go to manually install drivers or if you have installation cd/dvd you have to click with right mouse on every application on cd/dvd and click properties/compatibility and in compatibility mode choose windows xp.

This is how you can install win xp drivers on windows vista or seven.

You right... BUt, if his external card reader not working on Win7, he can decide does he need that, or can he replace that device... :)

We need configuration details, and we also can see does he can or cannot upgrade to Win7. Also, he mention that he run windows 7 advisor, and that can be very useful. We can see what CAN be a problem...

Regarding Compatibility Mode: I do believe the driver database for XP is Chicago, whilst the Driver database for Vista is not. Interesting the database for Windows 7 is also Chicago - which means you can use XP drivers under Windows 7 as they are the same driver architecture - whilst it would not be possible to use a Vista driver under Windows 7 Compatibility mode.

OP: do you know which device the Windows 7 Advisor said would be problematic?

"Genius drivers" can be great, but what if some devices don't have driver for Win7? Does this program can find alternate drivers (eg. for Vista) and offer you to install it?

There are some manufacturers that don't give support to some devices for Vista or Win 7.
Is possible that some more or less older computers can't upgrade to Win 7 reliablement.
How old are your computer? This is the firs question. After this, then we will can do it or not.
Is very important to have all the drivers and minimum required resources to install win 7.
Perhaps Win 7 Starter is a good solution to older computers, but I remind, It's possible only with Win 7 drivers.
I have installed so much Win versions that I can't remember, but I know by myself that there are some pc's that can't work with win7 because the processor power, graphics card and many more.
When we talk to upgrade to Win 7, is because we have an old pc o laptop, today modern pc's or laptops have installed Win7 from factory. So I remind, be careful with drivers and minimun required resources for Win 7.

Re: upgrading from XP to Win7 ?

I disagree. My computer are OLD OLD, and it's not design for Win7 :) Anyway, I use it and it's working well. You must have enough RAM, processor and graphics card that is supported with Win7 and computer will work!

I have ASUS A7N8X-X, AMD Athlon 2500+, 1,5 GB RAM and ATI Radeon 9550 graphic card, and on this configuration Win7 works! If I had better computer, my Win7 will work better and smoother. BUT, even with this configuration, Win7 will work!

Attached devices is a problem. If you have Webcam and you cannot find ANY driver for it, then you cannot use it.... In that case, we must find solution - buy new device, or if we don't need it, say goodbye to that device.

Again, we need configuration, and info which device the Windows 7 Advisor said would be problematic....

Windows Vista drivers can be used in windows 7 if no other more appropriate.
The starter works just like the rest of Windows 7, the only difference is more economical price
The only difference is that others can not use more than three applications at once

I take it your are currently running a 64bit version of XP?
Are you able to provide the device ID for the usb to lan adapter. Ill do the leg work and search around for a Win7 compat device driver.
                        Device ID will look somthing like;

hi, nice one for the screenshot. One small issue thou - the screen doesnt show the device id.
Are you able to provide a 2nd screenshot after you select 'Device Instance Path' from the dropbox box in the middle of the userform.
You'll know when you have the correct one as it'll look like my screenshot but the numbers will be different.

I think you have the same problem like everybody else - your graphic card is not supported in Win7 - just in VGA mode so the AERO doesn't work.
The updated drivers are not fully compatible and if you are using the ATI Catalyst I'm pretty sure that your system is crashing...

I use ATI Catalyst... :) You can install VISTA driver for Radeon. Download it, unpack, SETUP.EXE set in Compatibility mode for Vista, and install regularly... My graphics card works pretty well. ;)
