    Astra 2e

As many of you know Astra 2e for 28.2 east is scheduled for launch on the 1th of September, this is of great concern to us that are living on the fringe.

Initially it should go to 42 east for testing then on to 28.2 east.

A number of enthusiasts me included will be tuned in for the testing at both spots if any one else is interested please post any results here from which we should be able to work out roughly the dish size required for different areas.

    I have a 1.5, 1.25 and 1 mtr dishes ready for testing.

All anyone needs to join in is at least one dish of a reasonable size and a decent meter that will give measurements.

I am sure that some of you will be interested.

    Re: Astra 2e

I don't know the planed spot of the new Astra 2e, but the position 28,2° is intentionly focused on gb and (for technical reasons) perhaps france, benelux and west part of germany.
    This has copyright reasons.

I didn't hear about a change of that intention from astra.

It's not the position that is focused but the beams on the satellite itself most of the new sats have a wide European beam and 2f has a West Africa beam. In addition they do have a UK spot beam but as you are aware the actual performance of the beams can vary greatly from the published beam partly because all the sats at 28.2 cant occupy exacrly the samr spot they are miles apart and of course this alters the beam slightly. 2f is at approx. 28.3 east.
For example here in Southern Spain we can pick up 2a and 1n and previously 2d all with a 90 cm dish.

I believe that the ASTRA 2E will be the same as ASTRA 2F.
It is possible to receive ASTRA 2F UK beam in Spain?
Is my post useful for you? Please press sigpic

No, I don't think so ... Astra 2F beam is only for Great Britain / Ireland and, only marginally, the north of France

hmm, does it means that some of prime channels from 28E will leave European beam and be redireced to 28.2a??? I wouldn't like to kiss those channels goodbye...!! :-(

              don't know if it's me, but I can't see/open your attachment

@Triad: that's what I've read before elsewhere (don't remember where), but I'm afraid it's going that way.

                    Yes, of course !
Anyway currently Astra 2F has 3 beams:
                    - UK, the one I was talking about
                    - Europe, that covers whole Europe
                    - Africa

A complete and up to date summary of changes involving 28.2E can be found here: _http://www.astra2.org/astra2.html

It is possible to receive ASTRA 2F UK beam in Spain?
Yes it ranges from less then 1mtr in the North to 1.8 mtrs just South of Murcia, below that is a dead area. I did some tests on a number of dishes of different sizes and calculate that the dish size needed would be approx. 3 mtrs.
However as I said before 2e is very likely to be different smaller or larger dish required so we have to wait and see. The bbc are the only ones who have said that they are moving to 2e and of course next year we have the launch of 2g. After this it expected that 2a will move to 23.5 east so you would think that the channels on there will move to 2e or 2g.

2a has 2 beams 1 North and 1 South. The South beam we can pick up here on a 80 cm, to be sure of the north beam we need a 2.5 mtr.

Hope this info is useful. nml

hello @nm. Nice to know this, but are we to expect that some if not majority of channels from the European beam is going to transfer to narrow UK beam? That would be quite a bugger!??

I don't think so Triad because there wouldn't be enough room (transponders) and they will want to remain on the same transponder so it goes as seamlessly as possible and if you look at the PE beam on 2f and 2e it will give you a rough idea, we should be ok in Southern Spain.

And of course the reason is they don't need to go on the uk spot beam because they are encrypted and to lease a transponder on the uk spot is very expensive.

A I said in my first post when 2e is launched initially it wont go to 28.2 east but to another location probably 42 east to test the functionality of the transponders. They can't do this at 28 east because it would cause problems with the current transponders on 1n.
Once tested it will relocate to 28.2 east and channels will begin to transfer.
I will be testing and taking readings at both spots and will update here if members want me to.

                          Hope this helps. nml

                            Re: Astra 2e

The providers are subjected to copyright rules so they deal with the sat-providers and that's why astra has to focus the english-speaking stations to gb. Movies in original language (and that's mostly english) are very often the "object of desire". Same for fta football matches.

With a ~80cm dich you can receive the programms from 28,2° in the west part of germany, but in the east part it's impossible. The spot has a logarithmic loss of strength so in spain it's very difficult to receive.
