Of course you need to test by yourself. But some image are better comparing to some other ones (much faster, more stable, more functionnalities ...). But it is specially true with Enigma2 boxes.
For E1 ones, my preferences are also Gemini and Pli.

As other said there is not an correct answer . It is like asking which is the most beautiful woman in the world.

So what you do is test several images and keep the one that suits your needs. In DM800 it is easier because with Meoboot you can have all the images at the same time working off a USB stick and boot to the one you want.

My personal choices are OpenPLI for DM500 and Dm600 and DreamElite for Dm800.

Openpli has daily updates and apparently a great supportteam
The pli team eaven made a openpli version for the vu+ duo high def receiver
They are more involved and evoluate faster than team gemini
Anyway I agree with Vasilise that there isn't a 100% correct answer concerning the best choise of image. Myself I'm using openpli since a few weeks on my dreambox 7020.

The best image is Gemini 4.20. This image works beatifull and have no Timebomb

I think I'll start with openpli since I've heard so much about it. Well, actually read a lot as well. I think a maxvar image will do fine. I can just download what I really need later on. Right?

Don't put original images on dreambox clone, only patched images. Orginal image could put your dreambox clone dowh.
Eaven with recent clones that have a orginal dreambox original mac adress. Better stay carefull.

No, not yet. dm500HD is completly new model based on the dm8000 processor, it is not a 500 model anymore.
You can find dm500, dm800 and dm8000 for the moment.

The Nabilo images are great, i recommend u the nabilo darkster 2 image...

- This image non time bomb
- CCcam 2.1.4, CCcam Info, Ecminfo, and Teletext Ngrab image is integrated.
- Image is in Turkish and English. (Other languages can be downloaded addons Server.)
- Update satellites.xml file with 4 satellites are used. (Turksat, Hotbird, Eutelsat and Astra)
- Channel list, list view at the help button to change the channel.
- 75% of the memory is blank.
