    BAD VU fan problem?

    hey guys

the fan on my vu duo is intermittently becoming very very noisy. if it goes 15mins without becoming very noisy i'd be lucky. it is so noisy i got woke up at 4am when the box was recording something. when it starts to noise the only way to stop it is tap the fan a few times and then its ok for about 15 mins if im lucky. i took the fan out and cleaned it but still the same problem. surprisingly the fan seems in good condition.

anyone know what kinda fan i need to replace it and know where to get one. its impossible to watch the tv with it. its driving me nuts.

    thanks for any help guys

    Hello mate

The best way to solve your problem is to change the fan.

If I'm not mistaken the fan of Vu+Duo is a 12V fan with dimesions 50x50x10 and 2 pin.
Try to get it out of your box and make a search in the electronic stores.

If you can't find such a little fan of 12V, then you have to make a mod with a 5V fan taking power from the motherboard (sata, usb etc).

      hi alankellyeire

others often use an external fan, or one from a laptop.

btw: is your box placed 'alone' (so nothing under or above it, in a closet?) and do you use a HDD? This can cause extra heating problems.

have you tried to lubricate the axle
        dry lubricant is better:

        hexagonal graphite
        talc
        black pencil mine
        molybdenum disulfide
        teflon

          @aplok is right

Try to remove the fan out of the receiver and search for a small hole in the center under the cover of the fan on the front site.
Remove the small plastic cover and put a drop of oil inside the axle.

The noise will be stopped immediately.

i found a few fans on ebay that match ur description but not sure if they are good or not.

any one recommend a manufacturer or they all pretty much the same??

thanks for the quick responses guys

i would prefer just to replace the fan as its noisy at the best of times. my vu duo is a clone so its a cheap ass fan that is in there i assume.

yeah the box is placed on a shelf in the top corner of a room the only thing else on the shelf is a few pairs of 3d glasses, so it has plenty of space for air to circulate. it was pretty dusty the other day when i opened up the vu duo. don't worry i cleaned it. there is a laptop hdd in the box also.

              Re: BAD VU fan problem?

i got a fan from maplin and that sorted the problem. its not the quietest fan but its a lot less noisy that the previous one in it.
