New spiderbox not working

I installed two spiderboxes for a friend both 9900hd's .
three days ago one would'nt boot past F100 at start up so i used the recovery tool,after a few attempts we managed to reflash it and all was well again.

Last night the same happened to it again and i have tried all day with the restore tool to get it working.

does the recovery tool fail a lot?,i have checked pc device manager and ports seem to be fine .
Has anyone been in the same position and managed to get it working again,Otherwise as i said to him it will need to go back but he has no faith in Alsat as he thinks he would only get the same one back reflashed but still with the problem.

It seems to me the 9000HD is a much better box.

I had a look Toby my com port was set to 9600 the correct setting is 115200 bitrate,still nothing it did work a few nights ago when we first used the recovery tool but not now,looks like its a goner at a week old.

Will phone Alsat tomorrow and get it posted back to them ,well within the 28 days for returning faulty goods.

Toby i dont like these new 9900hd's you cant see the display its dull and the front panel buttons are small and hard to push in and out ,the box does'nt pick up the remote half as good as the 9000hd's .
One good feature is the usb socket on the front which is very handy but overall i dont think its as well made .
Anyway will let you all know how things go on getting it replaced fingers crossed.

It does seem that a lot of people are complaining about the very dim front panel on these boxes and at the moment there is no fix as it is down to hardware. I have eco mode switched on on my 9000 so I am used to the dim display and it does not bother me. The general consensus does seem to be that the 9900 is a better all round box with faster processor,MP3 player etc. It really is disappointing when you get let down with a new toy. I presume that the other box ( you mentioned two ) is working OK ?

also find on the 7000, front panel also quite dim but thats when in standby mode, found mainly bright when on chn number, but its not really important to me.
usb socket, yes but how many times you use???
but overall been a very good hd box, will get maxium use out of it till change, her indoors pleased with all the chns she sees!!!
(thats one good thing anyway)
get it exchanged if cannot ressolve??

Not familiar with spiderbox but a general rule to reflash the box if its crashing. Try changing the Flash drive and sometime they get currupted. Another option if you are flashing it through a PC, try to use a different pc. Its always a process of hit and trial!

the recovery tool needs to be used on a a pc tower with xp on it and a null modem lead it will not work on a laptop with a usb to serial converter

I follow you about the usb to serial converter (although I've read before some had success with it). Personally I believe you best need serial port (laptops with serial ports exists, as I have 2 of them). I don't think it'll only work with xp. What also is important is the speed of the port (check on the manual of the receiver if this spec of the RS232 port is there - if not you better search it - same speed is to be set in the pc/latop in RS232-settings).

About the null-modem cable: nullmodem means crossed (normally handshake not necessary).

Honoustly I had a similar problem with my mvision ; I was sure my recovery procedure was ok, as I tested it positive with another similar box ; on 'my' box
it didn't work (also F100 boot problem - has to send it back to reflash JTAG).

I dont know why but using a tower with xp on it not a laptop seems to work fine i have tried windows 7 on a laptop with a usb serial converter but not much luck i must admit there seems to be a lot of the f100 problems on hd9900 for some reason

pretty sure the problem is the serial-usb converter and not the laptop/windows.

i have both means to transfer, never any problems with either, scooterman well experienced to know.
my thoughts, faulty box, have had to return boxes myself in the past. (scooterman already stated, replacement required).

Yes the other box is working fine on the small dish in my friends sons bedroom, i suggested that he borrows his sons until a replacement comes but if he did that then he would'nt hear the end of it,so he is watching council tv until he gets a new box.

Yes iam running xp on a desk top ,it did flash and recover no problem the first time it went down ,now it does'nt matter how many times we try it wont come back this time.

Phoned the shop they said send it back and they would look at it ,he insisted on a replacement since its within the 28 day cooling off period ,if he gets the same one back we know it will happen again for sure,and after everything he has spent it would'nt really be fair ,lets hope this all goes smoothly,put it this way he told them in no uncertain terms what he expects from them ,lets wait and see.

I presume that the boxes are well ventilated and not in any sort of enclosed cabinet, if so you would need to fit some small computer fan or keep them on a laptop cooler. please keep us updated on the outcome.
