    Re: Vu+Solo2 vs GigaBlue Quad

    Buy the Solo2 mate, you won't regret it. My only gripe is that the transcoding hasn't been improved.
    The quality isn't great and is just about watchable on a mobile or small tablet. Anything bigger and it is not great.
    The duo 2 is hardware based transcoding as far as I know and you can change the bitrate of the stream to suit. Apparently it is a huge improvement on the solo2 and is watchable even on a large tv.
    Whereas the solo2 is a set bitrate and quite low quality.
    Then again I can't say too much as there are only 2 receivers with this function, and both are vu+

      @Bokkie

      hi,

      can you tell me please, what you mean exactly by transcoding ?

      i feel confuse with different meanings, as:

      - writing/sending vid under ts format

      - ... streaming

      - ts -> mpeg -> avi

      - vid.hd -> vid.low def for mobile

      thx

        Re: Vu+Solo2 vs GigaBlue Quad

        On the solo2 you can stream a channel directly to any pc or mobile device with a 3g connection or within your network.
        Previously to do this over 3g or internet you had to have a very fast upoad speed, or you had to reencode the stream on you pc with vlc player, lowering the bitrate, to stream over the Internet or 3g.
        The solo2, and now the duo2 do this on the fly. Lowering the bitrate directly from the box, allowing you to watch any channel, access recordings and set timers, etc from anywhere. As long as you have an Internet or 3g connection. .
        I am able to watch my Rugby wherever I am now on my mobile or tablet
        The solo2 was software based transcoding but the duo2 has improved on this by being hardware based.

          Re: Vu+Solo2 vs GigaBlue Quad

          You can pretty much do everything you can do on the solo2 and duo2 with just a standard enigma2 receiver the transcoding part would have to be aided by a 3rd party encoder such as VLC but as for accessing recording and setting timers this has been the norm since the inception of the DM500s years ago

            I'm very sure that I need a receiver with good support, as I'm coming from the dreambox world and I used to have everything I needed through the dreambox support.

            The second thought is that I don't really need more than 2 tuners, as I think Gigablue offers.

            So, I'm very close to Vu+ solo2.
            Is there anyone that can convince me to buy the Gigablue ?
            One good argument next to gigablue is its flash memory. Gigablue has 512 mb flash memory and 1 gb of ram. Vu+ solo2 has 256 mb flash memory.

              Re: Vu+Solo2 vs GigaBlue Quad

              Look at it this way pros and cons

              Solo2 Pro's: Gigabit Lan (If needed), Transcoding, Blackhole support

              Gigablue Pro's: Has 3rd Plug & Play tuner so you could have DVB-C if you have cable and $ly is going eventually ( Cost only £25 in UK ), Nice Colourful display on front, is around £40 cheaper than Solo2

              And lets get this Image support thing into proportion there really is only 2 images these days on most enigma2 receivers apart from Dreamboxes and they are Black hole and all the other teams OpenAAF,OpenVix etc... are all based on the Core OpenPLI image so basically all the same apart from some added tweaks

              I have had a Solo2 and in my opinion for normal satellite viewing it does nothing more than any other satellite receiver, If i was to buy again i would probably get the Gigablue as i like the idea that i could add a DVB-C tuner for my cable feed should i ever need it with the Solo2 your stuck with satellite

                Get the VU+ Solo2, better support, better at the specs, one of the best, if not the best brands for recievers.

                  That's means more storage space for plugins in Gigablue?
                  I'll put a HDD in whichever receiver I get.
                  Can this solve the problem in Vu+ solo2?

                    No need if you install Blackhole image just also install MeoBoot and get say a 4GB flash drive install Blackhole again in MeoBoot this will see the 4GB flash dive as your internal flash so you will have just less than 4GB for plugins on the Vu solo2

                      @digicon

                      hi

                      so i try figure out all of this (i have a dm500 since 2 months ...)

                      genuine:
                      Gigablue has 512 mb flash memory and 1 gb of ram.
                      Vu+ solo2 has 256 mb flash memory.

                      the flash memory might be considered as a primary disk (boot+os+sofwtare: enigma+ addon +www/pages.htm +...)
                      ( ... correct ? ...)

                      with Blackhole image
                      just also install MeoBoot
                      and get say a 4GB flash drive ( ... like external usb 4gb ? ...)
                      install Blackhole again in MeoBoot
                      this will see the 4GB flash dive as your internal flash
                      so you will have just less than 4GB for plugins on the Vu solo2

                      so:
                      Blackhole + usb 4gb ( including Meoboot + Blackhole ) => extended flash to 4gb ?

                      if so, all that can be on a usb 16, 32, 64 gb ?
                      power friendly and fanless !

                      ? tremendous !

                        Yes that is correct you can use what ever size flash drive you want once image is installed the rest for the flash drive can be used for plugins etc....

                          I have a question...
                          Can I add to Vu+ solo2 a usb tuner for dvb-c in order to receive terrestrial channels?
                          If yes, how much does it cost?

                              You have different options. Here is one example:

                              EDIT

                              another option around 65€: _http://www.pctvsystems.com/Products/ProductsEuropeAsia/Hybridproducts/PCTVQuatroSticknano/tabid/254/language/en-GB/Default.aspx

                                The article you linked mentions that 'sundtek' usb dvb-c tuners are the best for vu+ solo2. But the article does not mention the price of the tuner so I looked around beacause @ kalpikos asked the cost of it in previous post. The mentioned usb dvb-c tuner costs nearly 90 euros but in most of the webshops they are out of stock.
