you mean the transcoding into (divx, mpg, mkv, ... ) is processed by the rcvr, not by the laptop ?
transcoding requires quiete heavy codec lib, loaded into the flash ?

i see these flash size for vu+ brands:

Vu+ Ultimo Uno Solo Solo2 Duo (twin)
    Flash (MiB) 1024 128 128 256 128

so, i am afraid to miss something about this

or you mean ts-formated stream onto hdd, or even onto remote hdd via ngrab or samba ?

    pleased to hear from you,
    regards,

Transcoding requires a lot of cpu, where with "transcoding" we mean playing encoded video from receiver's hd (or from whatever other source)
No doubt, when dealing with progressive hd video, cpu is never enough.

When you receive a signal from a sat is it not the graphics chip in the box that does all the real processing you need a chip that will process the hd signal, the cpu will only assist, and if it is a duo one will do the the recording prog and one will do the viewing prog extra pc power is always an advantage but a better graphics chips is also needed. if it is left to the cpu to do all the work you will not see a great advantage.

The more of power is the reason why I prefer to buy a solo2 soon.
Also the booting time is reduced to ~30 seconds.
And it should have an opera web-browser which needs power.
And there the rule is: The more the better...

Before you all rush out and buy a Solo2 you do of course realise that due to Core driver implementation that the Solo2 at present and has been since release uses Just 'one' of its dual core 1300mhz processors and this has still not been fixed.

Also take into consideration why it was so cheap on release, it uses same technology as the Original Duo the Tuners are Board based in other words they need CPU power to run where as the Uno and Ultimo and the Upcoming Duo2 all have separate Silicone based Tuners which run independently of the processor.

            Food for thought

Does this mean that when the "core driver issue" become fixed "the horses may run with more power"?

Hopefully but like you say until the drivers fix the Processor issue its not as fast as it should be.

                  well ,

it is like buying a porsche turbo to the salesman, able and proud to manage the marketing language,

where the engineer tell us backstage the turbo is bypassed because they can not manage it,

all this because but they have to make salesman happy !

if it is true, is it worth to trust vu+ salesman ?

That's only a question of time.

And then imagine the possibilities of such a receiver (for such a price).
                    Special software updates will follow.

                      also this: noise :

higher the frequency, higher the elec power, higher the heat sunk,

at least, i hope they melt a recent chip, so that no need of a noisy (and power consuming) additional fan

that is, i wonder if they manage an adaptive freq level to meet the load requirement,

at least, the marketers and salesman may argue the high-tech cooler as a twin 1300, the second cpu cools down when the first works hot !

but may be it is quite usual nowadays: launch on the market a twin cpu, but not simultaneously, working one at a time ... ?

To the main question: it depends on what you also want from a modern sat-receiver than only watching tv.

If only watching, pvr-function and perhaps a bit cs, than it's overpowerd,
but if you also want e.g. internet surfing or a good media-player more cpu-power is always better!

                          hi mate,
i don't think so. By watching tv you will see a difference.
zapping, decoding and many others functions are very fast with a fast processor.

is it possible to measure the cpu load when watching, zapping, decoding, transcodin from ts to mpg, ... via the top command, ie:

                            telnet dbox
                            root

I have read that the enigma2 only use 1 core to do the work. Anyone can confirm this? Btw, the driver issue has been solved?

one issue about dual core cpu,

on my portable pc, dual core, when processing heavy duties,
i noticed only one cpu at the time was loaded,
and the load was periodically transferred to the second,
then the first, then the second, then the first ...

but, and not least, the fan was not requested -> energy and noise friendly !
when on rest, the cpu cools down, while the second works hard, and warm up

that is also a issue to keep in mind (especially for portable)

... i should test this issue with 2 (two) heavy duties ... and check it again ...
