SNR regards the quality of signal and is very important becouse often a signal with a good SNR is better than a stronger signal with a worse SNR

        Re: Snr & agc

I think I got some contradicting explanations.
Do I understand correctly that AGC is the strength of the signal (any signal) while the SNR is the quality of that signal (useful signal)?

Perhaps a little example can help:

If you have a weak signal (weak in signal strength and low snr) you won't have pic and sound. Now you try to raise the signal strength with an amplifier/repeater you will have more signal strength but you have also raised the disturbtions/hiss/whitenoise of the signal so you did not raise the quality of the signal.
Only a high signal strength is not usefull.

Thanks, this is clearer for the SNR. But what does it mean when the AGC is very high, while SNR is not?

It should be understood that the most important quality of a signal, there is a strong signal, but the low quality and watch TV it is impossible, in this case, you need to fine-tune the satellite dish

Please be clearer. I can't understand what you mean.

When setting up the satellite dish is that the signal is good and the quality of the signal is low, the need to further adjust the satellite dish to receive a good signal quality. This is from the experiments installation of satellite dishes.

So what are the factors affecting each of them?

The main factors is the accuracy of the settings of the satellite dish, set correctly LNB and sensitivity of the satellite receiver

+ additional: a good cable with good connections, and of course (said previously): is your dish big enough (check with footprint on eg satbeams - will give you a theoretical idea).

And of course the weather conditions when setting up the satellite dish, and of course the best signal quality in Sunny weather

AGC = Automatic Gain Control I thought the value indicated how much the signal is amplified, ie, a low value of AGC indicating good / short cables to the switch / LNB and fine tuned satellite dish?

Sorry if the question wasn't clear enough. What I meant to ask: are there different factors that affect snr and agc? I am trying to understand why agc would be high on some channels but the reception is bad.

I think this is just because of the bad settings LNB, you need to try to turn the LNB clockwise or counterclockwise
