To be honest Leroy, if I were you, I'd dive in head first and get an open source Linux receiver from the off.
I got a vu+ duo as my first stb, took me a bit to get the hang of it, but once you do it's the mutts nuts.
The beauty is all the plugin, etc that are available such as 1channel vod.
If you're looking for a linux receiver you can't go wrong with dm800, vu+ or even gigablue.
If you want to get a client only receiver then eaglebox, openbox, or slightly more expensive Blade 7000 which is about as plug and play as you get in this game.
Think about what you want to do with your receiver, have a good read and whatever you choose, you won't regret it.
