    Re: Newbie needs advice

To be honest Leroy, if I were you, I'd dive in head first and get an open source Linux receiver from the off.
I got a vu+ duo as my first stb, took me a bit to get the hang of it, but once you do it's the mutts nuts.
The beauty is all the plugin, etc that are available such as 1channel vod.
If you're looking for a linux receiver you can't go wrong with dm800, vu+ or even gigablue.
If you want to get a client only receiver then eaglebox, openbox, or slightly more expensive Blade 7000 which is about as plug and play as you get in this game.
Think about what you want to do with your receiver, have a good read and whatever you choose, you won't regret it.

Leroy a DM500s is the first box that i started with and it is so simple to use, especially with all the support on this website. Be aware though the DM500s is only Standard Definition. You would need the DM500HD for High Def. Dreambox also make other HD receivers. But i bought my first DM500s 2nd hand from a certain auction website for £35.00 and it was a genuine box not a clone. They are so simple to use and good fun to play around with.

There are plenty of tutorials on this site for DM500s

Yeah I agree, the DM500 is a good one to learn with, I even had to learn how to jtag it after a image update went wrong. Its easy to set up as a server or a client. If you want to update the image also, just be aware its the correct one, ie not a original image on a clone box..
