Re: pros and cons of homeplugs

In earlier post in September I said no problems with Spiderbox homeplugs for 3 years. Today one of the plugs has died!!
Can anyone advise me of a good replacement.
The plugs are rated at 200mbps , what might I gain if I switch to 500mbps plugs? So much choice out there what is currently recommended?

200 mbps should be fine if you want to use them for a box. Every one will have different experience with different types. I would suggest to buy these product with a longer warranty. Some of them come with 5 years warranty. If I am going to buy them with longer warranty then I would go for 500mbps because the technology changes so quickly and would need something which is usable after 5 years.

            hi

little tip: if you just want to add another one to your existing ones, be sure to get the pairing done where you buy it (the pairing is possible between the different brands and types, but requires some pc acknowledgement + soft).

Re: pros and cons of homeplugs

Pairing is not a problem if you have a windows pc and the possibility to connect them directly to your homepleg (also only for the configuration).
Many of them also have a button for quick setup.
Generally code are the same for all 500Mbps device, because all brand use the same chipset, remember that 500Mbps is a variant out-of-standard of 200Mbps device. 500Mbps device and 200Mbps device can work between but, obviously 500Mbps will slow down to 200Mbps speed.

If only one of your homeplug is broken you can change only one, and with a different brand. For example for many years I had in my network a Netgear and 2 Trust (oldest homeplug 1.0 specs).

500Mbps are an advantage if you have 2 or more high-load traffic at the same time because can handle real 220Mbps, 200Mbps can handle 50Mbps real.
A little warning: many of 500Mbps adapter has a 10/100Mbps built-in ethernet module, so per module real speed is 95-100Mbps, to use all capacity you must have 2 or more different traffic, so 4 or more adapter. If you buy a 500Mbps module with a Gigabit Ethernet build-in you can use all bandwith available only with a single pair.

Thanks for the info Cisco and Pan1100 it's the sort of comments I was looking for.
I live in a rural area and would buy on-line, how difficult is it to 'match' a pair on a PC?

Re: pros and cons of homeplugs

When you buy modules you can find inside the box a cd with a windows software.
Install the software and run it. You can find a voice like "encryption", "DES key", or similar, here you can select your personal passphrase. You will ask to insert also personal homeplug key, different modules by module, so before run software remove adapter from wall plug and read on the back personal module key, then copy it on a paper to provide it when asked.

Normally you can use only one software for all adpater (also if brands are different), if this not work for other brand homeplug devices find cd or download software from manufacture's website and install it, run and provide the same your own personal password selected before.

additional info on cisko's last post:
I have a Netgear here, and there are 3 'keys': Mac-address, serial number and password - after installing the software, read carefully what exactly you must enter.

They will work on a different ring main limitations are as follows - the
rings or circuits (such as upstairs and downstairs) mains must be on
the same fuse box / consumer box. My router is downstairs and my box
that I use my home plug on is upstairs different ring main I asked before
                        I buy home plugs.

Re: pros and cons of homeplugs

The biggest problems are from differential switch (also Residual-current device or RCD, residual-current circuit breaker or RCCB, ground fault circuit interrupter or GFCI) --> the object that cut off current when a device will faulty. If you have more than one you can have a signal attenuation or a signal loss.

But normally homeplug works well, the problem is similar to the attenuation of connectors into Television and Satellite coaxial cable.

The biggest problem is if your two room are not on two different electric connection (have 2 different current meter), in that case probably they cannot work. I've tested it connecting two different flat into the same building and they don't work, only a friend of mine report is working but with a slow speed.

Again great info. I have looked at the back of my Spiderplug the label shows : Item No./Input Voltage/Network Port/Transmission Medium/Transmission Speed.
No mention of 'Personal Module Key'. Is this something newer plugs now have?

                              hi huston

No, mine is about 5 years old and has this (Mac-address, serial number and password). Look again, perhaps something on the box (if you still have it), perhaps after installing the soft (if any ...) the plug will be recognised with it's numbers.

If you are in the UK, try the Devolo ones. I have a pair with wireless built-in. They are very reliable and work perfectly with dreambox and other things. Plus it will create a second wireless access point.
