You can get very good quality HD TV streams over the internet.

This is one that I have seen in action, the quality was very impressive:

An indication of the future of TV viewing?

Theoretically if they wanted to they can deny SLY to show these matches and claim they are the only option to view all the matches in the season because they already have the rights to show Sly sports1 & 2.
If this happened we could expect to see Sly 1&2 booted off BT Vision (closely followed by BT Vision being hacked and widely available down the local pub - remember OnDigital?).

Wasn't sky more or less forced into dropping their prices, and thereby making sky sports available to bt vision, virgin, etc?

          Yes I think you're right.

From the article in the link mahrkpat used in post 11:

"BT talks about using its new soccer rights to launch a new channel, offered alongside Sky Sports 1 and 2, to which BT already has regulated access thanks to Ofcom's pay-TV review, as part of broadband packages and the much-delayed YouView internet-enhanced Freeview service, to build an alternative to Sky's satellite-based platform"

They'll need very deep pockets to try and compete with sky.
As much as I hate to admit it, Sky is a pretty big player.

Virgin in particular have staked their future on being able to deliver content via Broadband. Many of their customers had been complaining about the lack of programming until the recent improvements in OnDemand services.

Incidentally, the BTVision Football package comes in to effect from 2013 as far as I understand it. ESPN keep the rights for the coming season.

Correct it seems a lot of people got confused when the rights came up to buy again, ESPN still have the 2012-2013 EPL rights and BT take over from 2013

Virgin would have a vested interest in delivering content via broadband, as they are one of the only broadband providers that can deliver the speeds required.
I had supposed 24mb broadband with sly and was lucky if I got 8mb.
Virgin seem much more stable, especially with fibre optic lines.

The problem with virgin is there download cap during the evening fron 4pm to 9pm until this is got shut off they will never be able to deliver an IP based tv service, i currently have BTInfinity2 and can say without a doubt i have yet to see any caps at anytime of day. Virgin need to invest Millions if it is to become an IP based company.

BT on the other hand are the same but have the upper hand on virgin where is i wuould say there is probably 100 times more people with a BT landline compared to every 1 cable customer

I don't see internet TV ever being dominant over satellite simply due to it's reliability. No one will be able to handle TV being unavailable due to a server crashing or whatever reason effects broadband. It simply will not be able to take over, satellite is completely reliable 98%, doesn't require anything complicated and just works.

Reliability and simplicity is what everyone wants and I don't see internet TV delivering that.

BT has recently won the bid for £75 million to get from the govt to improve the the quality of broadband in the North Yorkshire. It will take 18 months and the countryside would be able to get connected at 75mbps. They will provide 380mbps for the businesses in the countryside. At the moment BT infinity is available in only big towns of North Yorkshire.

I hope that newer and greater than 1080p HD will keep satellites in space for many moons to come . If and when tv consumers on a very large scale move solely to broadband , contention ratio issues may cause problems during primetime events .

I think it will be a long way off. Some rural areas in the uk (like where i live) are so far from the exchange (over 5 miles) and it is such a small exchange that it is not worth BT upgrading it. I only manage to get 1mb d/l speeds & .3mb u/l speeds. For the likes of people like me (and there are a lot of people like me) it will be impossible to get (if ever) internet tv. I can't imagine Sky are going to give up that easily.

it will never work because heavy users get capped all the time and they say there is no limit lol
