It's ironic that the main way the (UK) ISPs have for controlling what you do is either a cap or, more often, throttling where they adjust the maximum speed you are able to connect at (or upload at) according to time of day or your usage. And they call that unlimited.

This throttling is what will keep true high speed applications away from the masses.

Re: Impact of high speed internet

I find it incredible that ISP's can continually rip off the public by never supplying the speed you pay for, yet they are able to apply caps and throttling whenever you exceed what they
consider to be fair usage, surely it is time governments did something about this as all the balls seem to be with the ISP's

If you look at most of the ISP"s conditions it says fair usage policy apply what ever that means

Supposedly they are looking after the little guy who only uses small amounts of their bandwidth by protecting him from the people who download very large files and take large amounts of it. ( in other words getting what they are paying for).

People started complaining about the fair usage policy set by the internet providers. They sell it as "Unlimited Downloads*" The star says " Fair Usage Policy" means that if you are downloading more than 1 gb or 2 gb or whatever, they will control your speed and will put a cap. If it totally against the ofcom policy. BBC watchDog was the fisrt to brought up the matter and Sky Broadband was the fisrt to remove " Fair Usage Policy" from their website. But I would not subscribe to sky broadband due to a reason

What everyone has said is true, but the caps are only put into place if you really go too far. For instance downloading 300GB+ per month. Most people that want unlimited internet want it for going over say 10GB since most of the packages that are offered that are not unlimited go upto 2GB which is nowhere near enough. Also having that "freedom" of an unlimited data package is amazing even if you are not going to excessively use too much but just over the next best package of say 2GB...

Unlimited should mean Unlimited not capped not throttled not fair usage policy so if you want to use it streaming or downloading all day you can

Don't know what is the situation in GB, you guys obviously have some limitations there. We in Balcans are downloading some 100GB per month and no one says anything...
Mostly mkv movies and Xbox games...
At least it's my case. Obviously it's up to provider policy usage.

They will need to change my broadband as I can only manage 2Mb on a good day (just tested it @ 1.93) the most I have been able to acheive is 2.04 and this sometimes gets capped (although I pay for UNLIMITED downloads) and paying for supposedly 20Mb - they do not stop my downloads they just slow it down -----from 1.93????????????????
Wow that is slow. I was getting around 8-10 meg with sly, but have since changed to vermin media, and am now getting a constant 29.5 meg on my 30 meg broadband. Can't complain really.

                              hi

I only have about 10 or 15 GB/month (and that's more than enough for me), but most of my friends have unlimited, and as far as they say it's really unlimited (think some of them download some TB's each month, also speed stays - Belgium).

Broadband speeds will pickup in the UK once BT has upgraded from copper to fibber optic
