    Impact of high speed internet

With the advent of high speed internet streaming of t.v. programs is here now.

There are smart t.v's offering new channels from the internet also Apple T.v and ****** T.V bringing out their own set top boxes with even the B.B.C bringing out the YOUVIEW box to stream from the internet to your t.v's, SKY is joining this project as well.

All the major players trying to get as many channels into their platforms as possible, B.T has won the right to show 38 soccer games per season.

What impact will this have on satellite t.v. as the way we watch programs changes,

I think sat providers will fight hard and dirty to protect their business.

Don't expect to see premium content for low price on streaming service. Don't forget you need a strong and fast internet line to enjoy HD TV.

    Sat TV is not dead

A lot of communities, even here in the u.k. have no access to high speed broadband.
There are countries all around the world that rely on satellite as an only means of receiving tv.
I think streaming will become an option, not a replacement.

B.T has already grabbed 38 live matches to show, how long before someone like ****** gets its cheque book out to buy more live sports events who will be able to match the amount of money it can spend.
I agree totally that a strong and fast internet line is needed and lot of countries in Europe already have this and in the U.K fibre optics lines are being rolled out across the country.

But it is a option that will challenge the satellite companies, will sly still be able to charge you extra for watching HD broadcast on your HD television or to record a program on your hard drive for later viewing.

I am not predicting the end of satellite television but only the way they operate to keep hold of their viewers.

Well, not everyone can enjoy internet through optic fiber. Where I live, it's not cheap and not available everywhere.

ps : I don't live where my profile says

That is what I was getting at. For many countries around the world satellite tv is the only choice available.
I don't see tv entirely going online anytime soon.
More like an option of one or the other. Or both.

They are rights to the English Premiership and I am sure they would not have spent the money they have for second rate games.
Theoretically if they wanted to they can deny SLY to show these matches and claim they are the only option to view all the matches in the season because they already have the rights to show Sly sports1 & 2.

Re: Impact of high speed internet

BT won the rights at what cost some reports say that even selling the rights to show to sky they are still making a loss, Most report this was a gamble to get more subscribers for the BTvision service.

Lets not forget that Sky could in effect take Sports 1&2 of the BT vision Platform aka freeview if they wanted too. The only decision won in BT and Virgins favour was the price fixing sky tried to do with the sports pack which was overturned last year and the result Virgin and BT could offer lower deals for Sky sports 1&2 on there respective platforms.

In future rights battle i would expect to see al Jazeera make a bid if they are granted there UK license for there sports channel which has yet to be decided.

The point I am trying to make is that with there being more competition in the t.v broadcast industry will it eventually lead to cheaper prices for premium content so that the subscribers will be kept happy or will lead to being more expensive so the a person has to subscribe to different packages to view say all the matches in the premiership in a season.

I know exactly where your coming from but the problem is this has been tried before and lets face it there is no UK company that has the money and Clout that Sky have and that is why they have the majority of games and have done since the premier league started over 20 years ago.

Thats why i stated it will take a foreign provider with enough money and clout suhc as Al Jazeera to break that monopoly, Then we may see some a farer pricing structure

thats exactly what i was thinking because as long as sky will gain the upper hand there is no way another company will take it even sky itself is selling there matches to others so its not like that everybody can get the license, its more like you get the license from Sky itself.
