Their is a compas app for Android it will help you first then you can take the satfinder for the fine tunning. A cheap sat finder will help you with a harder noise if the signaal is stronger

        Re: easy find satelite

I used Satellite Director and SatFinder for Android (both free) and they helped to get the general direction (as did Dishpointer) but when it came to properly finding channels I needed to use a signal meter.

Like the idea of the Satfinder plugin. Is this only for Dreambox or is there a version for humble little Openbox?

Anyone following my saga on the installation forum will know that these gizmos are okay but there is no substitute for a decent compass to get your initial alignment right!

            Re: easy find satelite

Been playing with Sats for some 25 years, I have never used an external sat finder. Used a spirit level and an inclometer to get everything vertical and the right elevation, from then on it is start at the furthest east (for me 31E) moving to the furthest west (again for me 45W), then find 1W programing each sat at these end points. Than move the dish 1 degree at a time from east to locate the next sat, scan it and save, then to the next and so on. I have a tv screen in a window near to the sat dish so I can see when a signal has been found using the signal meter built into the sat rx (Vu+ Dou – Blackhole software). I have some 26 sats set up with good quality pics on all sats.
My dish is a 1.25m Prime focus with a twin LNB. The most difficult thing I found was using a separate dish motor drive but once I got my head around which way was east and west and remembering to allocate a number to each satellite it was not to difficult.
Does anyone know of a way to back up the positioner positions in case I ever have to replace?
Its great fun playing with settings so have ago.

My first installation was a free sly uk dish without subscribtion. That was the fisrt success on my own. Then another success was Using a zone1 dish for hotbird, signal is not good but at least I did it. The third success was installing a Free 90cm dish for Astra 19.2e on my own. Great signal and a great success. All done without using any equipments except Drill maching and Ladders, LOL

Doesn't your box have an option to make back-ups of settings, setup, channellists to usb??

@del6600: Each DiseqC motor comes with a preset sattelite positions but you can change that according to your own choice. When you use the function Go To X or "Recalculate" on some boxes, or reset the motor manually, it erases the stored data on the motors and resets it to the preset positions.
Tip: Always better to keep the manual instruction guide handy to find the origional positions. I would suggest when you store the satellite positions, write them down in your diary and never lose it.

                    Re: easy find satelite

You cant store any satellite position data with either GotoX which is another term for USALS as they are both the same and work from your longitude and latitude settings in the receiver both being and working from software control.

The only settings you can save are if like yourself you are setting each and every satellite with Diseqc 1.2 then each position has to have a number and on a Linux receiver such as your Vu Duo then all you have to do is when all satellite positions are stored via Diseqc 1.2 the go to the menu system and depending on which image you use do a personal backup of your settings which will back up Channel lists and your Diseqc 1.2 stored numbers.

If on the other hand your not using a Diseqc 1.2/Usals motor and are using 36v like myself then the Vbox or Gbox which ever 36v positioner box you sue will store thse positions in memory

You have said it nicely digicon. I didn't consider using a Vu Duo Or Solo because I don't have one. I was just telling the good old fashioned method for storing sat position numbers on a DiseqC motor and keep the diary for the future reference.

I must admit that's the best thing about Linux receivers you can either do a personal backup of your settings etc.. or a full image backup when you have it how you want it, This lets you try out other images and then you just load your personal backup and away you go and if you dont like it you just flash back your original full image backup and your away again.

I like the Personal backup like del6600 i use a 36v positioner and a Gbox and although the positions are stored in the Gbox if i flash a new image on my Uno then i have to either put every single number back in the service searching menu or the easiest way is to flash the backup and its all done in 10 seconds flat.

Agree. Love the fact that settings can be rectified quickly using a backup image.

On the subject of resetting motors using GotoX/Usals I'm wondering if my second-hand motor had been wiped at some point hence it not finding satellite positions properly. Sorry if this should be a separate topic...

You will have to set up the motor with USALS. Easy enough, just put your lattitude and longitude and it will find the satellites itself. you need to number the newly found satellites from 0 onwards and memorise the list or make a note in your diary if you dont have a DB or a VU+.
