Dear all, the new SES satellite ASTRA 1N is operational. It is located at 28.2 East. ASTRA 1N is notably being used by Channel 4 and ITV. The new satellite will also allow SES to offer its satellite-based broadband service ASTRA2Connect via 28.2 degrees East and thus complement its service offer from the 23.5 degrees East position.

Re: ASTRA 1N is operational.
Hi Vimmers,
You should have no problem receiving Eurobird 1 (28.5) and Astra 2A & 2B (28.2) with a 90cm dish. It is unlikely you will be able to recieve 2D though.
Check out the footprint maps here:

Re: ASTRA 1N is operational.
I don't know if it has been comented before, but according to a spanish forum, Astra 1KR will be moved from 19º East to 28º on january, while Astra 1N will be moved from 28º to 19º on february.
So all chanels which have to be on 1N will be on 1KR then.
Remember that 1KR has a spot beam which was tested over Poland some years ago, so that spot beam sure will be more closed to UK than the current one from 1N.
European people will finally lose UK channels.helped use "Thanks"

Re: ASTRA 1N is operational.
A bit more information on Astra 1KR. It was launched in April 2006 as a replacement for Astra 1K, which failed to reach orbit on launch in 2002.
The craft launched to 3.4° east for testing, before moving to Astra 19.2°E, where it replaced Astra 1B, which was effectively decommissioned, and Astra 1C, which was then elderly and running beneath full capacity. It was expected to also replace Astra 2C, which was under-utilised, and to allow that satellite to returned to Astra 28.2°E to join 2A/2B/2D to provide additional capacity. However, SES stated that Astra 1L would replace Astra 2C.
here is the spot from 1KR when it was over poland:

Looking at this you need a 70cm dish to get this spot beam, not going to get much off a digi dish
But:
Late in 2009 SES Astra announced that three more satellites have been ordered for 28.2 position. The three craft, Astra 2E, Astra 2F and Astra 2G, are being built by Astrium on the Eurostar E3000 platform for Ku and Ka band use in Europe and Africa, and will be launched between 2012 and 2014.
In August 2011 Astra 1N was launched to the 28.2°E position to provide interim capacity for the UK and Republic of Ireland with a UK spot beam receivable on 45cm dishes. Astra 1N was originally designed to provide digital television and radio broadcast services across Europe from the Astra 19.2°E position and is expected to be moved to that orbital position when the first of Astra 2E, Astra 2F and Astra 2G come into service.
Interesting thread here.
