On the day of the big World Cup surprise, Ghana narrowly failed to stretch probability to the extent of becoming the first African team to reach the semi-finals. They had their chances in normal time, when they briefly led through Sulley Muntari's long-range opening goal, only to see Uruguay hold their nerve 4-2 in the shoot-out.

The South Americans will now play Holland for the chance to reach the final in this stadium, leaving Ghana to go home with Brazil. They can say they have gone further than any other African team in this competition, previous quarter-finalists Cameroon and Senegal having not made it to penalties, but that will be scant consolation for Ghana with the entire continent rooting for them. Especially as Kevin-Prince Boateng missed a close-range header right at the end of the game, before in an unbelievably frantic finale Luis Suárez was dismissed for handling Dominic Adiyiah's header on the line and Asamoah Gyan struck the bar with the penalty with the last kick of the match.

Uruguay said they were expecting a physical challenge from Ghana, not something they would normally shrink from, and lost no time in showing they could handle themselves. In the 10th minute it was Egidio Arévalo who used his strength to hustle Anthony Annan off the ball, setting up the first chance of the game for Suárez, who shot straight at Richard Kingson. Jorge Fucile overstepped the mark with a foul on Kwadwo Asamoah 10 minutes later, picking up a second tournament booking.



Kingson made a sharp reaction save when the ball was deflected off John Mensah following a Forlán corner, though looked less convincing when coming out to punch away a free-kick and only succeeding in sending the ball straight up in the air. That, coupled with Ghana's habit of giving the ball away cheaply in dangerous areas of their own half, gave Uruguay plenty of encouragement and it took a stretching block by Mensah to knock a Suárez effort off target and after Isaac Vorsah had missed his clearing kick.
Ghana are nothing if not masters of the sudden, unexpected threat, however, and from their first corner after half an hour (Uruguay had six by that stage) Vorsah planted a firm header inches wide from Muntari's cross. Asamoah Gyan went just as close seconds later on what amounted to Ghana's second attack of the game, and after applying most of the first-half pressure Uruguay could have found themselves two goals down by the interval.



Muntari was wide with a header from another deep cross as the Ghanaians began to work out that aerial bombardment could be the way to break through. Shortly before the interval, Fucile completed an unhappy first half by jumping straight over the diminutive Samuel Inkoom and almost knocking himself out when he landed on his neck.

-Eye-catching as ever, Inkoom supplied the cross from which Kevin-Prince Boateng attempted the tournament's most spectacular goal as the first half entered stoppage time, only to see his acrobatic overhead kick fly wide. Uruguay possibly made the fatal mistake of thinking they could make it to the dressing room without damage just then, unless they imagined Muntari would not be able to hurt them from 30 yards out as the clock ticked down. In both cases they were wrong.

Taking advantage of the fact that no one bothered to close him down from a position only a few yards beyond the centre circle, Muntari shot straight and true, the ball curling away from the surprised Fernando Muslera at the last moment and finding its way into his bottom corner. Truly Ghana can score from anywhere.



What the Africans have difficulty with is scoring from conventional situations of superiority. They wasted a double overlap just before Uruguay's equaliser, giving themselves assorted options on a swift counter but not being able to find the pass that released any of them. A goal then could have made the game safe but Ghana were pegged back by Forlán's fourth goal of the tournament, direct from a free-kick after John Paintsil had gone into the book for a foul on Fucile.

Kingson might have done better with a shot that dipped over his head even though he was standing on his line, though Forlán struck the ball beautifully.

I'm gutted for Ghana. They deserved the win tonight, and watching that cheat Suarez celebrate after Ghana missed the penalty is unforgivable.

I think Suarez is a hero, I love to si when someone make so much devoted to his country and team. He like Henry know that everyone will spit on him after what he done and he still sacrificed him self for national team.

If it had indeed been the will of God that Argentina should claim this World Cup, then Diego Maradona must feel utterly abandoned now. Germany's staggering and irresistible progress through this tournament has propelled them yet again beyond fancied opposition. This was a slaughter to leave El Diego numbed and close to tears on the touchline. His dream has died.

He may concede this to have been another jaw-dropping master-class in incisive counterattacking football with which Argentina could not compete. Joachim Löw's team may have lacked the star names of their South American rivals, but they were always the more dangerous side here, with the scoreline, even at 4-0, anything but flattering. Youthful zest combines with purring ability and tactical discipline in their approach. After this victory, Germany will be undaunted at the prospect of playing either Paraguay or even Spain in the semi-finals. The momentum and conviction is all theirs.

In Bastian Schweinsteiger they boasted this contest's most dominant force, his personal display summed up by his contribution to Germany's third goal as he bustled beyond Angel Di María, Javier Pastore and Gonzalo Higuaín's half-hearted challenges before pulling back for Arne Friedrich to bundle home. Michael Ballack, the absent Germany captain, leapt in celebration in the stands. In the veteran's absence, this side is outmanoeuvring all-comers. They appear unstoppable.



The Germans had picked up where they left off against England, their slick exchanges sweeping downfield as Argentinian players gasped in their vapour trails. Philipp Lahm was a blur of energy down the right, a permanent outlet for team-mates to spread the play. Lukas Podolski was just as energetic down the opposite flank and, even if Mesut Ozil flitted in and out of the contest in his free role, Schweinsteiger set the side's rhythm and dominated central midfield.

The Bayern Munich midfielder was authoritative where Javier Mascherano could only appear flustered. It was Schweinsteiger's early free-kick, conceded after Nicolás Otamendi's late lunge on Podolski, that was flicked in by Müller who had slipped away from the right-back to glance a header through Sergio Romero. Maradona was all animated frustration though, at the interval, he may have been relieved. The Germans should have added a second while Argentina dawdled, Miroslav Klose skying over a shot from an unchallenged position near the penalty spot after Gabriel Heinze's error and Müller's pull-back.

The menace had been all German, the South Americans' anxiety prompting a huddle just inside the mouth of the tunnel as they sought urgency with the intrusive television cameras shoved away by Martín Demichelis. That briefly spurred them on, Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez upping their tempo in a bid to undermine the German back line, though Löw's side were happy to let their opponents ping their passes at arm's length with little space behind for the tricky forwards to exploit.



The chances created were ambitious rather than truly threatening, Manuel Neuer claiming from Higuaín, Tevez and Di María with the winger battering beyond the far post when he did beat the goalkeeper. Yet, as their desperation grew, so too did Germany's threat on the break. A ramshackle back line was duly pierced for a second time as the grounded Müller conjured a hooked pass to liberate Podolski, with his centre beyond Nicolás Burdisso tapped into the gaping net by Klose.

Thereafter, this took on the appearance of a rout with Friedrich's third followed in the dying seconds by Klose's 52nd international goal on his 100th appearance. Messi, in contrast, ended this tournament goalless. As Argentina lament, so Germany dare to dream.

Spain found just enough of the beautiful game — and a touch of good luck — to advance to the World Cup semi-finals, beating Paraguay 1-0 on Saturday night.

David Villa took the tournament scoring lead with his fifth goal, which banked in off both posts in the 83th minute. The goal finished off a brilliant, three-way passing combination that typifies the way the European champions like to play. It sent Spain into the World Cup's final four for the first time in 60 years.

Spain faces Germany on Wednesday in Durban — a reprise of its 1-0 victory in the Euro 2008 final.



One night after penalty kicks decided Uruguay's shootout win over Ghana, they were critical in Spain's victory.

A somewhat subdued match suddenly became chaotic in a two-minute span of the second half. Gerard Pique pulled down Paraguay's Oscar Cardozo in the penalty area on a corner kick, earning a yellow card and giving Cardozo a penalty kick.

With the vuvuzelas reaching a crescendo, the striker who ended his team's shootout win over Japan was denied brilliantly this time by Iker Casillas, who dived left to block Cardozo's low kick.

Seconds later, Villa broke free behind the defence and was hauled down by Antolin Alcoraz, who drew a yellow card. Xabi Alonso went to the penalty spot and sent a wicked drive into the net.



Again, the stadium rocked, but referee Carlos Batres of Guatemala waved off the goal, saying a Spain player entered the area too soon.

Given a second chance, keeper Justo Villar guessed correctly, diving left to stop the penalty kick. He also knocked the rebound away from Cesc Fabregas before defender Paulo Da Silva made a leg save at the goal line on another shot by Sergio Ramos.

After that wild sequence, it seemed anything was possible.

And for Spain, anything is possible with Villa on the field. Not only is he the Spaniards' best finisher, but he's a sparkplug with his darting runs and imaginative moves.

His goal came off the kind of attack that has carried Spain toward the top of the soccer world. Andres Iniesta surged through the Paraguay defence and passed to the right to Pedro, whose right-footed kick slammed off the goalpost.

The rebound came to Silva, and his shot hit the far post, then — amazingly — caromed across the net, off the left post and in.

Fans for both teams wore red and blended into the colour scheme of the seats in Ellis Park Stadium. Even if you couldn't see them so well, you sure could hear their vuvuzelas blaring, especially when Silva scored.



But Paraguay, a nation that never has been a factor at the World Cup and hasn't won a major title since Copa America in 1979, wasn't about to fold. The final six minutes of regulation and three minutes of extra time featured free-flowing soccer at both ends, and Casillas once again had to rescue the Spaniards.

Lucas Barrios broke free on right wing and Casillas charged out of his net to stop his hard drive. The rebound went to Roque Santa Cruz, and Casillas scrambled back to make a spectacular stop to preserve victory.

At the end, as the Spanish players rushed to mob Casillas, a distraught Cardozo walked away from teammates and team officials, holding his jersey over his face, wiping away tears.

Is indeed so good to have 3 European teams in semi finals and i am very happy. Another excellent performance of Germany which punished Argentina with unbelievable 4:0 result.
Argentina was favorite to win this game but Germans gave them lessons how to play football.
I think Uruguay have not enough power to beat Holland so this year we are going to have a winner from Europe for first time in History of World Cup i mean out of Europe Continent.

could be ze germans as fifa are giving them alot of decisions and disallowing goals when needed to get them through and they have had the ball last season no one else has this and that seems to be the problem so i will be wanting spain or holland to win in the intrest of fair play
