WORLD CUP 2010 NEWS
Van Marwijk: All about the next match
Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk warned that it was vital his players put their quarter-final victory over Brazil behind them as he looked forward to Tuesday's semi-final against Uruguay in an interview with FIFA.
FIFA: Congratulations, you've reached the semi-finals. What a match on Friday against Brazil.
Bert van Marwijk: It was a match with everything in it for us. At the press conference afterwards, I said that you could see the last two years reflected in one match. We're a team that look very stable and can fall back on good organisation, and through that, we also have confidence and can play football very well. We're a team that can also be patient but we were facing a situation like this for the first time. In the first 20 minutes you could see that we weren't ourselves and in that period we could have easily lost the match.
What do you think went wrong in those first 20 minutes?
Our organisation wasn't right when they scored. Apart from that I think the players were positioned well during the whole match. But before the game I also said that against Brazil you really have to be yourself and play your own game, dictate your own tempo. We had decided that before and spoken about it, but then you begin and you see that, somehow, Brazil were just that bit smarter, that bit more aggressive, and more professional as well. They had a bit more confidence and we were missing that. We should have shown more initiative and self-confidence. You could see that after 20-25 minutes, it was coming back a bit and I hoped then that if we got to half-time at 1-0, we'd still have a chance in the second half. It was then that we shook off all the pressure and we played a very good match.
How proud are you of your players?
For me, the best moments are the moments when you get rewarded as a team for all the work you've done. That's what I enjoy most. The boys played fantastically well and showed the right mentality and on such a stage, in such an important match with so much pressure they came back from 1-0 down. That's just very good.
The euphoria at home is massive at the moment and maybe it's good that we're so far away and can't witness it because we really need to focus on Uruguay and that won’t be easy.
Bert van Marwijk, Netherlands coach
You said yourself that the team process is important. If you had to describe yourself as a coach, what do you think is most important?
I'm very clear to the players. They should be able to call you at night and I'll be there for them, but I like to show some very clear boundaries. I think it’s important that you're in the middle of the group at the right moments, but also take a distance from them at the right times. It's important that you can influence but that you don't get influenced. These are some of the most important characteristics for a coach. Everyone does it in his own way and me as well. Everything I say is my truth, not the one and only truth.
Now it's Uruguay in the semi finals. How well do you know them?
We've already seen a lot of Uruguay and I know some of the players. It will be a very dangerous match. I warned this on the first day two years ago – there's always the next game. The euphoria at home is massive at the moment and maybe it's good that we're so far away and can't witness it because we really need to focus on Uruguay and that won’t be easy. They didn't reach the semi final for nothing, so we have to really focus again and not think that we're already there.
Is that the biggest danger for you – the euphoria and the changes you need to make?
We have witnessed it before in the past. Think about two years ago in Austria and Switzerland – we beat Italy and France and everybody already thought we would become European champions but we didn't even survive the quarter-finals because we thought that we were already there. That's what I've tried to make clear, that this has to be different. Until now, the players have shown that they've picked that up very well but this will be another important test.
So in that sense, you fully trust your players?
I've a lot of faith in my players and in everything – our whole organisation and the way we work. But in the end it's also the mindset at a particular moment that decides whether you win a match or not.

Netherlands 3, Uruguay 2
NETHERLANDS IN FINALE
Playmaker Wesley Sneijder inspired Netherlands to a 3-2 win over Uruguay on Tuesday that sent them back to the World Cup final after a 32-year wait.
Sneijder, scorer of both goals in the 2-1 quarter-final win over Brazil, was on target in the 70th minute to put the Dutch 2-1 ahead before Arjen Robben got a third three minutes later.
Maximiliano Pereira grabbed a second goal for Uruguay in the second minute of added time but despite a late spell of pressure from the South Americans it was too late to stop the Dutch.
The first half had ended 1-1 after superb long-range strikes from left back Giovanni van Bronckhorst for Netherlands and forward Diego Forlan for the Uruguayans.
Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera handed the Dutch an early chance when he failed to hold Robben’s cross and the ball fell to Dirk Kuyt but he fired over the bar.
Robben had a shot blocked by his own player before Van Bronckhorst put the Dutch ahead in the 18th minute with a powerful, rising shot which went in off the far post.
The goal sparked the Uruguayans - missing striker Luis Suarez through suspension and captain Diego Lugano through injury -- into life and they began to attack with more purpose.
They levelled four minutes before halftime when Forlan collected a pass, cut inside his marker and scored with a long-range shot that caught goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg wrong footed although he did get a touch.
The Dutch had more possession after the break but it was Uruguay who created the better openings.
Alvaro Pereira’s chip was headed off the line by Van Bronckhorst and Forlan’s curling free kick forced Stekelenburg to turn the ball away at the foot of his near post.
Robben then wasted a golden chance for the Dutch when he fired wide when a rebound landed on his weaker right foot.
But Sneijder put the Dutch back in front with a shot through a forest of legs for his fifth goal of the tournament to become joint top scorer with Spain’s David Villa.
Three minutes later, Robben scored with a perfectly placed downward header after Kuyt’s cross from the left and although Uruguay got a second goal through Pereira the Dutch triumphed.

Octopus Paul predicts Spain win over Germany
Octopus oracle Paul is predicting Germany will be defeated by Spain at the World Cup semifinal.
Sea Life Aquarium’s spokesman Daniel Fey said on Tuesday that the famous mollusk from Oberhausen chose a mussel from a glass tank marked with a Spanish flag, while ignoring the tank marked with the German colours - indicating a Spanish victory in Wednesday’s semifinal.
But there could be hope for the Germans.
The only time the usually-prescient Paul erred in the past was in picking a Germany-Spain matchup in the 2008 European Championship, when he picked Germany and Spain prevailed.
Otherwise, Paul correctly predicting Germany’s wins over Argentina and England, and also foretold the victories over Australia and Ghana and the country’s loss to Serbia.

PREVIEW
GERMANY-SPAIN
It is hard to argue against there being a better team in this particular World Cup tournament. Having scored 13 goals courtesy of some scintillating attacking play the Germans will be afraid of no one.
An important point to consider when looking at Germany is their preparation coming into the tournament. They look like the best prepared team by an almighty chasm. Physically they look fresh, fit, powerful, and fast. Tactically they have been meticulously prepared for the system they are playing and man for man they are well balanced with talent in every area of the field.
The problem other teams have had when playing Germany is that they cannot match them collectively in all of these areas and therefore it is hard trying to play catch up - it is too late.
Spain, who have great talent, have not been quite so convincing, plodding their way to the semi-final. They play the same way (4-3-3) no matter who they play and generally with the exact same personnel. Without David Villa (Barcelona) pulling off some magic at just the right moments it could be argued the Spanish would have been home with some of the other highly favoured nations. Nevertheless, they have found their way because they have persisted with their cleverness in the final third and the diminutive striker has come through.
Both teams are strong defensively and each team established themselves as quality, productive, attacking teams. So what will the difference be?
It is likely to be the dynamism of the Germans. They use their athleticism and movement on and off the ball to intelligently create space. The Spanish are more methodical in their build-up and at times set themselves up as being predictable with rarely, if ever, going direct with their passes.
Germany have proved to be competent in all attacking areas: counter attacking; possession build-up; or direct play. It is this variety, tied in with their terrific pace, which will likely dislodge the Spanish more effectively than the Spanish will find breaking down the Germans at the back.
The 4-2-3-1 formation of Germany will not be easy for Spain to deal with irrespective of the unavailability of the prodigious Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich) who has proved to be an international midfield star.
An exciting game is on tap.
Looking for a winner?
In 2008 Spain beat Germany 1-0 in the European Championship final but two years on - in present time - it will be more about the in-form team which undoubtedly is Germany.
Based on this alone, expect Germany to get through.
