Re: FIFA World Cup 2010 -Who Wins? Vote.

    Previews Germany v Argentina

    World Cup 2010 head-to-head: Germany v Argentina

Argentina play a quick, bright attacking game – but then again so do Germany. And both are in blistering form

Argentina's coach Diego Maradona is having a ball at this World Cup and is sometimes more entertaining than the matches.

    Form

    Argentina v Nigeria 1-0, v South Korea 4-1, v Greece 2-0, v Mexico 3-1

    Germany v Australia 4-0, v Serbia 0-1, v Ghana 1-0, v England 4-1

Both teams are in blistering form, and confidence in each camp must be sky high after impressive round-of-16 wins. Argentina arguably faced a stiffer test against Mexico than did Germany against England – Mexico outplayed England in a friendly just before the tournament started – but both sides have been among the goals since the word go. Argentina will be encouraged by the brief period in the first half in Bloemfontein when England had Germany on the ropes a little bit, either side of the phantom goal. Diego Maradona has acknowledged that a correct refereeing decision there would have made life a lot more difficult for Germany, and his players will be hoping to similarly exploit inexperience in the German defence.

    Previous meetings

    Argentina won 8

    Germany won 5

    Drawn 5

    Argentina goals 25

    Germany goals 24

Germany beat Argentina in the 1990 final, though both teams have evolved considerably since then. Argentina now play a quick, bright attacking game, and so do Germany. The quarter-final meeting in the last World Cup might be more relevant. Then, as now, Argentina looked unstoppable, until Jürgen Klinsmann's unfancied Germans actually stopped them, taking the match to the end of extra time and inevitably winning on penalties. The same thing could happen again, no World Cup student ever writes off Germany, though there is no home advantage this time and Manuel Neuer is a far less experienced goalkeeper than Jens Lehmann. Argentina have the firepower to prevent the same thing happening in Cape Town.

    Managers

    Diego Maradona v Joachim Löw

A contrast in styles, although put up virtually any manager in the world against Maradona and you would have a contrast in styles. Superficially, Löw is a quiet, undemonstrative type who tends towards expressionlessness on the touchline, while Maradona is an extrovert, hyperactive camera magnet who is sometimes more entertaining than the match. Both men clearly know they are photogenic and not so secretly enjoy the spotlight, though personalities apart it is the effect they have on their teams that matters. Löw has had his critics but proved at this World Cup that he is an ideal modern manager for a modern German team. Maradona has possibly proved even more. He has earned the right to be taken seriously, and consequently so has his team. The driver is not going to crash the bus after all.

    Key clash

Lionel Messi v the Germany defence

Barcelona's little genius has not scored a goal yet in the World Cup, but that does not mean he is having a bad tournament or has disappointed in a similar manner to Wayne Rooney. He was excellent in the group games and he made the opening goal against Mexico, the ludicrously offside one that Carlos Tevez scored. Big-name players usually step forward in big games, and Messi's creativity and running with the ball could trouble a German defence that found dealing with England's attack relatively easy. While the Germans were able to push England all over the pitch they could be on the receiving end this time. Even if Messi fails to score, Argentina have Gonzalo Higuaín and Tevez waiting to pounce, and that's not even counting Diego Milito and Sergio Agüero on the bench. Messi, one feels, is due a big game.

    Expectations

Chile's coach, Marcelo Bielsa, said it was acceptable to go out of the World Cup to Brazil, and in their heart of hearts Germany may feel the same way about Argentina. That is not to say the Germans expect to be beaten, they will doubtless put up a fight, but the two South American giants are looking ominously potent at this World Cup and there is every chance of them meeting in the final. Germany, as always, set out to get as far as possible in this World Cup and give a good account of Bundesliga standards. Argentina think they can win it, at least they do now their unpredictable coach has proved he is not going to be an obstacle to progress. Argentina should prevail – on paper at least they have a superior squad – but it would not be the greatest surprise should Germany prove savvy enough to turn the weight of expectation against their illustrious opponents. That is what Germans tend to do in World Cups.

Fifa investigates claims of Australian World Cup 2022 bid gifts
      • Australian government forced to reaffirm bid backing
      • Claims of pearl necklaces and cufflinks given to Fifa officials

Fifa today said it would investigate allegations that Australia's bid to host the 2022 World Cup had offered illegal inducements and gifts that broke its guidelines.

The Australian government, which has supplied the majority of the A$45m (£25.5m) budget, was today forced to reaffirm its support for the bid following a flurry of newspaper headlines about millions spent on overseas consultants and gifts for Fifa executives.

The Age newspaper published a string of revelations about the Australian bid after acquiring documents, believed to have been leaked by a former employee, that contained a detailed breakdown of the bid budget.

It also alleged that gifts of pearl necklaces and cufflinks were presented at a 2008 dinner for Fifa officials at the home of the Football Federation Australia chairman, Frank Lowy, when Australia was hosting the Fifa congress. The bid had not been formally announced at the time.

Fifa's rules say World Cup bidders can give gifts of "symbolic or incidental value and that exclude any influence on a decision in relation to the bidding process". Bidders are also forbidden from criticising rivals or making deals to trade support before the Fifa executive committee vote in December.

The guidelines were published last year after England's 2018 bid team was revealed to have given luxury handbags valued at about £230 each to executive members.

FFA and the bid chief executive, Ben Buckley, said it was "a widely accepted, common practice among governments, many business and sporting organisations to provide symbolic gifts to visiting international delegations".

He said other gifts that had been given to Fifa delegates and executive committee members included boomerangs, Driza-Bone jackets, Australian wines, scarves, beanies, RM Williams belts and wallets.

During a rocky period for the English bid last year, it faced criticism for giving the wives of each of the 24 Fifa executive committee members a Mulberry handbag.

The controversial Fifa vice-president Jack Warner returned his, claiming to have been "insulted" by the English bid team.

The report in the Age revealed Fedor Radmann and Peter Hargitay, international consultants hired to help deliver the World Cup for Australia, stand to receive up to A$11.37m in fees and bonuses if it succeeds.

Australia's bid also offered payment for a Trinidad & Tobago Under-20 team to travel to Cyprus, the newspaper claimed, but Buckley said it was common practice for bidding nations to invest in football development schemes overseas.

Bid insiders admitted the allegations had adversely impacted on Australia's chances of beating the United States and Qatar to the right to host the tournament, but said that all its outgoings were wholly justifiable.

The newspaper also detailed an expenses-paid trip to Australia for another Concacaf representative on Fifa's executive committee, Rafael Salguero from Guatemala.

Buckley said it was common practice to invite senior figures in world football to Australia to promote the bid, but that Salguero was yet to visit.

"All invitations extended are football-related and intended to promote Australia, including its bid, and its relations with fellow Fifa members. We can confirm that these invitations have included one to Mr Rafael Salguero to inspect Australia's infrastructure and facilities," he said.

"At this stage Mr Salguero has been unable to attend. A standing invitation exists for all senior Fifa officials to visit Australia at their convenience."

According to the Age, Hargitay is being paid A$1.35m by the FFA and would be eligible for a success fee of A$2.54m. Radmann's work for the Australian bid will earn him up to A$3.49m via a German consulting firm. He is also entitled to a A$3.99m success fee, the reports said.

As part of a separate contract, the FFA is paying Radmann's business partner, Andreas Abold, an additional A$3m for World Cup "bid book production and bid advice".

The report also suggested the FFA did not outline to the federal government the specific details of how taxpayers' money was to be spent.

Australia's sports minister, Kate Ellis, today vowed to closely scrutinise payments made to all lobbyists involved in the 2022 bid. "Obviously the way the FFA spends government money is subject to the usual reporting and scrutiny requirements," a spokesman for Ellis said.

"Any evidence to the contrary will be thoroughly investigated by the government, as would any alleged breach of the funding agreement."

Ellis said a bid taskforce was already in place and was working alongside the FFA to ensure the money had been spent "appropriately".

The Australian government has enthusiastically backed the bid with public money, believing that the A$3.07bn economic boost and estimated 74,000 jobs that would be created if it was successful would make it worth the investment.

"FFA has acted in accordance with Fifa guidelines in respect to its bid for the 2022 Fifa World Cup," said Buckley.

"Furthermore our financial records and reporting for the World Cup bid are in accordance with our World Cup bid funding agreement and independently audited. Our regular progress reports under this agreement have been transparent and any suggestion otherwise is mischievous and unhelpful," he added.

"It is important to remind everyone that a Fifa World Cup brings untold benefits and excitement to the host country as currently evident in South Africa and that is the reason FFA is engaged in a competitive bidding process for the world's biggest sporting contest."

                              Holland 2-1 Brazil

World Cup 2010: Holland knock out Brazil with unlikeliest comeback

Wesley Sneijder is congratulated by team-mates after scoring Holland's second goal against Brazil.

The first Brazilian own goal in 97 World Cup matches, off the head of Felipe Melo, set up a victory in which Holland avenged their defeat at the hands of the South Americans in the 1998 semi-finals. Now the inquests will start on Dunga's regime after Bert van Marwijk's side won through to the last four with a victory in which Arjen Robben's skills proved decisive. The Bayern Munich winger had a role in setting up both goals, the second of them scored by Wesley Sneijder, while also provoking Melo into a stamp that saw Brazil playing the last 17 minutes a man short.

On the eve of the match Dunga and Van Marwijk had been unanimous in their declaration that total football and samba football were archaic concepts with no relevance to the present day. And from the moment Juan barged Robin van Persie out of the path of Dirk Kuyt's looping cross in the opening minute, this was always going to be a match with an edge.

There was a late change for Holland when Joris Mathijsen, who had played all four of their previous games partnered by John Heitinga in the middle of the Oranje defence, suffered a knee injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Andre Ooijer, formerly of Blackburn Rovers. The change may have had some influence on the opening goal, which came in the 10th minute when Melo, from inside his own half, measured a straight ball that invited Robinho to run behind the two centre-backs and stroke the ball past Maarten Stekelenburg from 15 yards as unfussily as a man peeling a ripe banana.

Brazil had two chances to increase their lead before the interval, first when a right-wing corner was returned to Daniel Alves, whose cross was met by Juan with a first-time drive that just cleared the crossbar, and then when Robinho's persistence provided an opening for Kaká, whose curling right-foot shot was turned around the post by the diving Stekelenburg.

For Holland there were no such clearcut openings by that stage. Every time Robben, stationed wide on the right, turned inside to try to exploit his strong left foot, he found himself running helplessly into a thicket of three powerful defenders.

It was the breakdown of one of Brazil's best combination moves, involving Kaká, Robinho and Luís Fabiano, that led to Holland's equaliser after 53 minutes. Robben finally found himself one on one with Michel Bastos, who had been booked in the first half for persistently fouling the Dutch winger. Going to ground this time under minimal contact, Robben turned the free-kick back to Sneijder, who delivered a long head-height diagonal ball into the middle and watched as Júlio César's attempt to punch clear was impeded by the jump of Melo, the ball skimming off the top of the defender's head and into the net.

Robben's increasing ability to sow panic on the left flank of the Brazil defence paid further dividends after 68 minutes, when he swung in a corner from the right that Kuyt, at the near post, glanced on to Sneijder, who had no need to jump in order to guide the ball home. Five minutes later Melo's stupidity saw Brazil reduced to 10 men and no longer able to mount the coherent attacks that might have kept them in the competition.
