just sold it for £60, i took on board your help/advice etc etc but decided it could turn out to be more hassle than its worth

Little addition (bit of topic, but think can be helpful): there are RS232/USB-converters that don't work (I know from experience) - better is to use the serial port (if your computer/laptop has one of course), if not: first try to check if the converter really is working.
