    powerline/wireless repeater

currently i am connected to my router via a ethernet cable however know i want to move the satellite receiver downstairs i have a couple of options
powerline- however recently released that my upstairs and downstairs have different electrical circuit so don't think it will work.

wireless- i have got a wireless dongle but i don't think that the connection is going to be any good as there are a lot of walls in the way but will give it a try tomorrow

wireless repeater- this is like power line however it will be set up to catch the signal of the main router the will amplify that signal for me to receive full connection however i have not heard of anyone connect a satellite box to a repeater and also not sure if it is dhcp enabled

does a receiver have to be connected to a dhcp enabled router
so can someone tell me the best thing to do and getting a ethernet cable and connecting is not a solution and so is movie the router.

    i have a skybox M3

As long as the fusebox/consumer box is the same for upstairs and downstairs then it should work because they work on phase and the phase for your house should be the same your neighbour would be on a different phase for isolation purpose.

      I use them too.
I started using 14Mbyte powerbox connecton.... several years ago.
I never had problem with them.

Last year I changed them with new one up to 200MByte.

Still the same, without any problem, except the connection is faster... of course.

Anyway... I was quite sure not to have any problem with both of them.
Several years ago I redesigned the electric circuit into my house, and I used good materials (good cable, good switching, tipology star connection and so on).

      Be happy using these device.

      Ciao

or you can try using a old router as a wireless bridge.

I think you can use the new router models with transfer rates of up to 1000 MB, and the signal passes through walls with small losses

AFAIK walls are a big problem for wifi.
Higher speed (transfer rate) like 802.11n doesn't mean longer range.
Anyway wifi behavior can be unpredictable and the only way to go is giving it a try.
Sometimes just moving the router/access point a couple of meters, or adjusting antennas (vertical or horizontal polarization) can make a big difference.

                hi guys

Agree with gianni - I'm using a usb-Wifi-adapter (802.11g) and working fine - 2 walls between them and about 10 meter. Only thing that happens a few times a year is that I need to re-install the software (don't know why).

I had the same setup but for some reason there was just a little area
which happened to be where my stb was that seem to have weak signal,
just a half metre away signal strong again that's why opted for homeplugs.
Still do not know the reason why this happens.

                    hi mahrkpat

                    hmmm

I used to had a homeplug there instead of the usb-wifi ... for me much better now than the homeplug...
I think we can conclude that both solutions can be good, but their 'success' depends on a few different things - so, not always easy to say what's the best - trial and error - anyway, for me cable is still the best option (if possible of course - ref. distances, walls).
