High CPU usage in HD channels

    Hi.

I´m using DVBViewer with PowerDVD in a AMD 5000+ and a AMD 3850 (latest drivers)..the problem is when i see HD channels, the cpu usage jumps to 66%.

    Is this normal?

    Thanks.

its normal if you use onboard graphic card which has no GPU .... or GPU not work good (is not strong), also it may be the codec you use for HD channels not support DXVA for GPU...
    what is your graphic card?

      Thanks for the answer.

My graphic card is a ATI 3850 512mb GDDR4 (High end from some years ago). I did install CoreAVC and setup for DXVA use..but when i see a MKV it gets 100% cpu, without DXVA in CoreAVC it drops to 20%. I dont know if its a bad graphic card (it runs games well) or bad drivers.

With other codecs, i have worse results..

      What can i test more?

Do you have freezes when playing a full-hd video or a hd channels or only many percents cpu-usage?

When DVBViewer is running alone, no. But when i use other software that pushes the CPU, yes.

I´m starting to believe is something with the graphic card..it should be doing some of the CPU work.

Just in case i will switch from x64 to x32..

Well, using now 32bits, tested different codecs/drivers..not much of a improvement.

Whats yours pc specs and cpu consumption with 1920*1088 channels?

            Thanks

              Things go like this
              1. You need to install CoreCodec 3.0.1. Previous versions only support CUVID (Nvidia hardware h264 decoding), but 3.0.1 also support DXVA specially for ATI cards.
              2. Install latest drivers for your ATI card
              3. In CoreAVC control panel enable DXVA acceleration
After these steps when playing h264 content CoreAVC icon in system tray must be seen in RED color, that means hardware acceleration used. If such icon will be BLUE it means no hardware acceleration used.
              4. If nothing could be made with CoreAVC (blue icon), you may try to install LAV codecs - these are freeware codecs with hardware acceleration of NVIDIA and ATI cards.

Try VLC Player (VideoLan Player). It support DVB card and Mpeg4 with GPU.
If it work fine set up in other applications x264 codec.

Using CoreAVC doesnt do much difference comparing with PowerDVD or fddshow or LAV codecs or ..

But i noticed the coreavc icon is blue, so i dont have hardware accelaration..but why? i´ve read a lot that ATI 3870 is DXVA compatible and it does reduce cpu consumption..

I´ve the latest (possible) ATI drivers.

Does VLC work with Plugins? I dont have access to a FTA HD channel.

No, only FTA, VLC is a simple multimedia player that support dvb card and FTA channels only.

                    Anyway try x264 codec.

I cant get better results with any codec.

Most probably is a bug in ATI drivers thats limiting the use of DXVA.

A cheap NVIDIA card will do the trick (60$€)? I´m using a 3870, but i´m not a gamer..so this card is a bit overkill for me.

Have you an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ AND or OR an APU A8-3850?

APU has also CPU and GPU on the same chip.

Install "ATI Avivo suite", also knows as "AMD Media Codec Package" or "Unified Video Decoder" (UVD), this is official ati/amd software for GPU's video rendering.

But it didint do any change on any codec. I´m really decided do purchase a NVIDIA card, at least i know that CUDA works quite well.
