[TUTORIAL] PC to Dreambox streaming using VLC

Using this guide, you should be able to get PC to Dreambox streaming working so that you can watch movies from your PC on your Dreambox.

The method described below should work on all Enigma 1 Dreambox models and all images, except DM5600 and DM7025. Please try it on your box and image and let us know if it works with you.

NOTE: Please download all needed software from the links provided at the end.

• Needed software:
  • VLC Media Player 0.8.1
  • VLC Client 0.2.3
  
  
• On your PC
  • Install "VLC Media Player 0.8.1" on your PC. Last versions of "VLC Media Player" are not working properly with this plugin. If you already installed on your PC a newer version of videolan but you still want to install version 0.8.1 in a different folder to be used to watch movies from PC with your dreambox, you can do that since there are no problems with other existing versions. Do not use any space in the install folder name and uncheck all install options. If you are using version 0.8.1 only, please select and check all install options instead.
  • Select "VLC media player" icon on your desktop (create one if you don't have one) and right click with your mouse to select "Properties". Go to "Shortcut" and write after exe name:
    

    "--intf wxwin --extraintf=http"

    Make sure the shortcut you're working with points to the newly installed VLC Media Player 0.8.1
    
    
    
• Run "VLC Media Player 0.8.1" by clicking over icon you just edited. If you get warning from windows firewall, click on "Unblock"
• From the "Settings" menu select "Preferences..."
• Select "Input" in the list at left of program window, input 8080 in "Server port" and save by clicking on "Save" key at the bottom
  
  
  
• Exit VLC and run it again from the same shortcut
• STILL ON THE PC
  • Extract VLC Client 0.2.3 and edit vlc.xml from var\tuxbox\config using Notepad or Notepad++ and put your PC IP as shown in green in the below image.
  • Also change the local directory on the PC pointing to your movies (shown in yellow in the below image)
  • Save vlc.xml
  
  
  
  

On your dreambox

• Copy all files you find in "VLC Client 0.2.3" zip archive to your dreambox with a ftp client or DCC:
  "vlc.xml" on "/var/tuxbox/config"
  "vlc.cfg" and "vlc.so" on "/var/tuxbox/plugins"
• Goto plugins menu (generally clicking over yellow key) and run "VideoLanClient", you should see listed all content of folder you edited in "vlc.xml" file.
  
  
  
• Select video file and press "OK" on remote to start play.
• In few seconds, your Dreambox should start playing the selected video

my box began to freezen partly. also there was occasionally an unwanted slow motion. I changed that then in vlc.xml worth the videosize in the "AVI-line" to 352x576. that helped and now runs all perfectly. The picturequality is a bit better in the higher solution but itīs O.K.

Hi superhefty, what kind of hardware do you have (CPU ,Memory)?

I believe the cause of slowness in your case is the CPU! For this to work smoothly you'll require a very fast CPU because VLC needs to read video frames from the video file on the local PC and then convert them to a format the is understood by the dreambox in real time. The same applies to the audio. The number of frames to read per second is dependent on the video file it self, for instance, PAL videos have 25 frames per second, while NTSC videos have either ~30 or ~24 frames per second.

This process is VERY VERY CPU hungry...

The solution you came up with reduces the size of the encoded frame size which means less work (and CPU load) during encoding which results in a smoother playback on the dreambox.

After you extract vlc_client_0.2.3.zip, you will get folder

var, in it tuxbox folder, and in it are folders config and plugins

After You change ip address and start dir in vlc.xml file, You can copy var folder to var folder in your receiver

As it says above, this is for Enigma1. The DM800 is enigma2 which is why /var/tuxbox/plugins, and /var/tuxbox/config do not exist.

Try any pli image its easy with any pli image.you can stream from pc to dm and dm to pc.

i have pli image on dreambox 500, cant get it to work from pc to dreambox, works the other way round fine. i am having problems because all the guides i can find are for windows operating system, i use linux (ubuntu)
cant believe its harder to do linux to linux than it is windows to linux, also amazes me how much of the dbox software is written for windows rather than linux but thats another topic

For streaming from pc to dm for windows,you open your browser,type your dm ip and log in.click on the stream button,then the settings button there change ip to the ip of your pc and the drives,its as simple as that try it on linux maybe it will work since streaming from dm to pc works for you.

Does it support subtitles? I have movies on PC with subtitles in .srt format.

not sure of the answer but I've found a post on internet saying you can use the .srt file and use yellow/yellow button to choose the subtitles

can you try that?
