    DM800HD thermal problem

    Hi guys,

I have readed a lot of things about the heating problems of this good box, and I have buyed a laptop cooling fan system to help the original cooling fan. This was great but now I have a problem - the original fan induces some electric discharges and these are trashing the image. At the beggining I had the impression that this is comming from the external cooling system - but I have stopped it and still had the image whith trash. I have thinked that is a problem whith the tunner - changed whith another from a friend and had the same problem. Then I have cutted 1 connector of the original fans power supply and the image is crystal clear again. For the moment I'm using the external cooling system and the box is working good. Now I have two questions:

    1. Did anyone else had this problem??

    and if yes

    2. Changing the original fan would bring back the trash on the image??

    Thanks a lot

I respond to myself - changhing the fan doesn't helped... Then I put a 220μF/6,3V capacitor on the 2 wires and everything is OK...

The internal fans on the clone are cheap quality. Mine started making a noise within a couple of months!

I removed the fan and intalled two of mine and connected to pin 8 and 21 of the scart socket.

So the fans turn off and on with the standby.

Lots od people are using a laptop cooler fan like you.

      Hope that helps.

other members who have clones of 800hd have no problem of warming !
maybe there are different quality of clones
i'm going to purchase an hd model but when i read you,
i'm not sure to buy a clone of 800hd maybe i prefer vu+solo

Vu +Solo is ok. I always had Original Dreamboxes and the latest one (the 800HD se) has also a cooling fan incorporated inside which is very quite and you can also increase or decrease its speed software wise. One other thing when I had the DB 800 HD (the first one) it had no fan so what I found to be efficient was to put a normal CPU fan (1.5 to 2 inches) on the Dreambox either sucking hot air out, or upside down, throwing cold air in and this left the DB very cool. Normally the voltages of these fans are 12 volts so I just connected the fan to a small 12V D.C.power supply (normal DC chargers units)

Finally I have find the real problem... a few things before.. the thermal problem started after I have installed an 160GB WD SATA drive.... The trashing problems seems to came from this (defective) hdd. I have removed the drive and the capacitor and now everything seems to be ok. I installed another 250GB disk and it's ok, but the inside of the DM800 is hot (in my opinion) so I have putted two laptop fans (externally powered) and now I'm satisfyied whith the thermal issue but now the whole thing it's a little bit noisy (noticed most during the nights). It seems that I'm never 100% satisfied but I thing this is the designer's fault - other STB's have greather boxes and no thermal problems... The positive things of this STB - in my opinion are - it's powered by Linux (easy to manage for me), excellent image quality in HD (I'm using the BH image) and super easy sharing options - this is unbeatable by now...

And to respond - yes it is aLinux box but I think is more expensive than a DM800HD clone.

Do you have any HDD installed in the STB??? I haven't problems untill I have installed one ... How about the noise are producing the fans??? Maybe I had bad luck but I'm intenting to change the original internal fan - it becomes noisy after 2 months...I don't know but I have the impression that now I'm paying the price to not buying the original DM800HD PVR...

If you read above - I'm using a laptop cooling unit connected to an external psu (naminng an old Nokia charger - it provides me the 5V needed by the 2 fans)..

Really, I can't believe this - knowing my STB, and suposing that all are quite the same.. maybe you're lucky or the place where you have the box is cold...
Mine whithout the two fans dies in less than an hour.

                              1. Just replace your coolers with new ones, but this time look at quality not at prices (they are cheap anyway, are just some coolers)

                              2. About instability are you using a suitable PSU ? after you added the HDD have you upgraded the PSU ?
