    DM800 Hard drive fault?

i have dm800 clone with internal sata hdd 500gb, box is well over 1 year old.
the hard drive intermittently goes on and off, for example I when I watch a recorded program, at any time the recorded program will stop playing, and the same goes when I try to do a backup on the hard drive, the back stops anytime in the middle of backup?

I can only guess that the hard drive is faulty, but im not 100% sure,
any idea what could be wrong?

    btw, I have reflashed image.

Just run an "fsck" from command shell against your HD.

    example:
    Code:
    # fsck /dev/sda1

      Hello mate

What is the format of your HDD ?
      Fat32 or Ext3 ?

You said that you have tried to reflash your box,
but did you try another image ?

Many images have serious problems with HDD.
Try an image that works well for sure on other boxes.

if its easy for you remove the disk and connect it on a pc, check disk for errors and chose automatic fix. you can also use defragmenter or format (you will loose everything) . those programs are free from Microsoft, but did a good work on some PS3 hard disk i try, there are also other better programs if you like.

It could also be a Faulty power supply or even that the power supply is on its way out, powering the box, hard drive and motor on a dish for some clone power supplys is asking far too much

OK, This is what I done so far, I swapped the hdd with my 2nd dm800. and the hard drive that I thought was faulty is working fine on my 2nd dm800, tested it 5 times just to make sure so the hdd is defintley not faulty.

now the dm800 that had the problem has a different hdd from the other dm800, now the dm800 would not boot up when the hdd is connected, its just stuck on booting screen

This only apply when the filesystem on HDD is FAT32 ...

This also was my first though.

switch the power supplys between them, i think the PSU may be the problem

                  Re: DM800 Hard drive fault?

I have reflashed the image many times and switched the PSU, did not make any difference.

at the moment I can only guess that part of the motherboard that controls sata hard drive is faulty, apart from that everything else seems to be working, USB Flash drive is working,

It' s the only logical conclusion ...
Your last hope is that the problem is in the supply section of the board.
You can use a digital multimeter to check voltage on the power supply pins of the hard disk.
If you do not see +5 and +12v you can derive them from another section of the board.

I bought a 2.5 sata enclosure from ebay for less than £4 and converted the internal hard drive into an external USB hard drive, so the hard drives not going to waste.
