Sorry, I have been looking at too many diagrams, of course the scaarts av.

I have tried flashing with dreamUp_DM500 V2.18a 20040711 and it actually communicates but when it has finished uploading, it says uploading complete, "waiting for acknowledge"

I will try and find some earlier versions of dreamUp.

your DreamUp version you use is a new
As I told you you have to use an old.... very old version

This is v1.2.2.0
and works fine with my 500s.

You don't need jtag to recover your box !!!
Your box is ok and needs only a reflash with right version of Dreamup.

Am I being stupid here, should I have an image ready to load, or is it just a case of running dreamUp first?

I've always been using latest version of DreamUp with any kind of dm500s with no problems at all.
Of course you need an image to flash ... but you still didn't say if you are using a native serial port or not

Sorry I seem to have lost a post there, I remember typing that I am using the PCs DB9 COM1 serial port.

( and that I intend using our old laptops printer port if I have to resort to Jtaging it )

Do you try to connect your box with your router?

Forget about ports and routers...

If you have firewall to your pc, please disabled

When you swich your box to power you must get a message:
box type dm500,ping result ok, box is alive and speaking....

if you get that all is ok

You have the right com port in your pc,
your connection beetwen pc and boxis ok,
your cable is ok ...

Your problem is the Dreamup or a wrong image.
Go to this page

and download it

This is the latest version of openpli maxvar for dm500s.
Use the Dreamup that I posted adove to flash your box.

I was talking about COM1 port, that the 9 pin DIN is connected to, and what baud rate to set it to.

It just identifies the DM500, and gets stuck trying to initiate flashload upload....

I downloaded the image you suggested, but I cant do anything with it until the greyed out boxes of dreamUp are active ?

If it sees that it is a DM500, then the actual data transfer of the nulmodem must be working presumably, so what is the part that does the ping test ?

Use the appropiate COM port.
Check under Device manager which Com port you are using.
To do this open up Device manager, Go down to Ports section, There you should see your null modem cable Com number eg Com1, Com3 etc

If you select the wrong port first time ,then if you now select the correct port it will not work even if you restart dreamup.
You have to restart your computer for this to work.

Unplug all cables of your box.
Try to erase image and then reflash.

There is only com1 available, and it says its working fine. I have flashed some eeproms using com1 before, so I know that works.

I am starting to feel like I am going to have to Jtag it, but I am worried about setting everything up from scratch, with my limited knowledge..

hi mate, does your box still start up at all, if yes can you still communicate with box via ftp software, if you can then you can reflash the box the rootcram.fs method.
here goes
When you have an UTP (LAN) connection between your PC and Dreambox, do the following:

Rename the image into root.cramfs (in small letters)
Copy this root.cramfs with a FTP-software to your Dreambox in the subdirectory /var/tmp
Push on the Dream or Menu button on your remote control to get into the Enigma menu
Go to the System Settings menu and choose the Software update


Now choose Software update where you will see 2 possibilities:

Internet update
Manual update

Thanks, I cant ping the box with the LAN connection, and my network places doesn't see the box there - (I am not very experienced with networks ) and I cant see it on explorer.

So I cant even see any directories there :-(

If you can't download the image with the help of the program DreamUP, then probably you will have to use the Jtag, you need to make a special cable, is a complex procedure.

The cable is easy, and the soldering, but its the setting up I am scared of after loading a new image.....

I have no idea what it involves, but it seems like you have to know what tuner you have, and LNA etc, and of course with this box not talking to me I can't save any existing settings .

Never mind I cant make it worse !

It cant be the rs232 chip as it doesnt see the LAN either, so I will have a go at Jtag tonight

I would recomend you one more time, to check your steps...

1. Connect the null modem cable both to pc and box.
2. Start dreamup
3. Uncheck 'use network'
4. Click connect
5. Plug power into your dreambox
6. Click Flash erase
7. Browse and Select the image

Finally I suggest you:
-try any dreamup version you can find (old and new)
-try a new power adapter for dreambox 500s
-try to flash it with other pc

Just to jump in and give a maybe good hint. If you use windows 7/vista, remember you probably will have problem with rights. So run dreamup with administraitor right, or turn of UAC and then try with dreamup.
