Thanks guys @ kalpikos it all works up to your step 5, but then it gets stuck, the flash box stays greyed out, and it says " initiating flashload upload "

and thats as far as it gets.

Although I tried one version, idreamUp_DM500 V2.18a 20040711 and it actually communicates but when it has finished uploading, it says uploading complete, "waiting for acknowledge" and stays there forever.

All the other versions I have tried stick at DM500


@ duhoki I will look at that, I dont know what administrator rights means, how do you turn off UAC ?

Whoops, not applicable I am running XP ...

OK its off to the chopping shop - or the Jtag shop - I can't make it worse and I will have to face the setting up if the Jtag breathes the kiss of life into it.

Thanks all you guys for helping me try to resuscitate it, it seems we have tried it all.

A note for others, I can get a 12v 2 amp power supply here for under $8, I wish I had changed it every year, I was warned that they are unreliable !

( I thought it was genuine when I bought it from its 09 MAC number, but evidently that can also be tampered with )

There might be a slight chance that I will be asking some advice a little later if the Jtag works :-)

OK I have made up a quick Jtag connection and have downloaded a Jtag DM500S loader/image/sketch whatever, so I will try it now on the old laptop ( which has a parallel printer port )

You can build a jtag inteface very easily: you only need a parallel SUB-D connector and five 100 ohms resistors.
Just a couple of advices that maybe you won't find in the guides:
1 - keep wires short
2 - use thin wires (if they are too thick there is a chance that copper pads get detached from the board cause the mechanical resistance of the wires).

I am trying to find a user friendly jtag image for the DM500S , the ones I have found have been trasnlated and I struggle to understand them

What do you mean with "image" ?
Do you mean "guide" ? or "picture" ?

OK I knocked up a jtag lead and its now talking me !

I tried loading one image, but the remote flickers the green light but wont put it into standby ( red ) and theres no video

I will try another image now that I can talk to it

Wow I have just had a look at the latest images for the DM500S clones, and they are all scifi, is there the good old simple version around, there are so many types !

Thanks everyone, all fixed up, and the jtag was easy with grcki.jtag , even showed me which tuner I had.

You're very lucky.
You have done something that needs a lot of patience and knowlege.
If you want to tell you the true..., I was thinking about hardware problem.
...but fortunately all is ok

I think that the hold story began from your faulty power adapter.
So, be carefull in the future
