Any hope for my DM500S ?

My ( probably cloned ) DM500S started playing up a few days ago, taking perhaps 20 or 30 seconds to lock on when changing chans ( even though the S/N and BER were fine )

Then last night it gave up, and we just had a flashing green LED.

I checked the power coming in, which measured 12.2 v at the DC plug.

When I opened the box and checked the 12v coming in ( on load ) with a scope, it was down to a few volts and fluctuating.

Briliant ! I connected another 12v supply, and the LED lit steady, and I thought I had solved it, but alas, the remote does nothing and there is nothing coming out of the AV sockets.

Thats when I found this forum, ( and am impressed with the amount of information here )

I tried a search on " problem after power supply failed " but it just seemd like I must reflash with dreamUp.

I made up a nul modem cable, but when dreamUp tells me to switch on the dreambox, it shows the time, and that I have a DM500, and the status says initiating flash loader upload, but how long must I wait for this to happen? It just sits there with the LED on.

I have tried it with DreamUP DM500S CLONE and one I found on these forums.

I have also connected the ethernet plug, but cant see the box on its Enigma web interface either.

The another 12v power supply that you tested, it's a dreambox power supply ? or just a power supply that you found ?
The 500s needs a 2A power supply.
Is your's 2A?

totally agree with kalpikos, in case you have the right power supply then possibly there was a crash in the system and you must flash dm500s again.
all you must have is
1 the wright power supply
2. rs232 cable (serial port), you must change port properties in device manager to 11500
3.dreamup, try different versions
4.try openpli or pli jade images, they are more stable

Yes its a 2 amp PSU, I will have a look at the baudrate, but it does recognise at as a DM500, so it must have some communication??

I have the Pli Jade on there at the moment, if I can communicate I will try and get a later version?

I am a little worried about the time bomb though.

Did you flash any gemini image?
if yes, what version?

When you connect your box to pc via null modem cable did not recognised?

I havnt flashed anything yet, its been running for 2 years on Pi Jade ok.


The modem sees the dreambox as a DM500 but then doesnt go anyfurther, I was expecting a list of files or something ?

First, no gemini, no timebomb ...

Your problem to reflash could be related to two factors:
- null modem cable (or also serial port drivers if you are using an usb serial adapter)
- bootloader corrupted

You can check both just trying the same operation with a working dm500s: if it doesn't work you must check your cable / usb adapter driver; if it works it's your bootloader and you have to use jtag to reflash.

I made up a nulmodem cable, the dreambox only uses 3 wires, pin 5 ( ground ) and pins 3 and 2 crossed over for Rx and Tx, these are fine.

I dont know anyone around here with another DM500 or any other dreambox.

I was afraid somebody was going to mention the jtag option, it sounds a bit daunting to me, I am in electronics but all this is rather new to me !

I will read up about it tonight and see if I can understand it.

I suggest you to find the earlier version of DreamUp.
The new versions have a lot of problems with 500s.
Have you ever flashed with this cable your box?
I mean, is your cable ok?

If I want to try and Jtag it, is it correct that I can either make up a lead to go to the scaart connector, or to the footprint of the jtag socket ?

I have just made up the nulmodem cable today, but there are only 3 wires used and I have the pins 2 and 3 crossed over ( tx and rx ) and pin 5 is the ground.

Yes, your null modem is ok.
You didn't mention if you are using a native serial port or an usb adapter and it can make a big difference.
If you are using an usb adapter try with another computer with a native serial port (all old laptop have usually one).
Jtag is really simple ... you only need a minimum skill in soldering and a pc with parallel port.
I understand it will be your last resort but, in case, you can do it without problems.

Then you ought to copy the BIN files into the rewrite catalog and rename it to BLIMG. Remember, you should make the BIN file suitable for you Low Noise Block.

and I am not sure I am up to this.

No, jtag has nothing to do with scart connector.
You have to connect to the mainboard (if you will ever need, I will point you to guide)
