Tip & trick for noisy fan.

Here is what I did to get a cool dreambox with no noise:
1) I removed that noisy internal fan
2) I put the 12 v wires (those from the fan) outside the box.
3) I took a PC cpu fan,and added a 120 ohm resistor (2w) in serial on the 12 v wires.
4) I position the Cpu fan on top of the dreambox (externally just above the tuner).

Result is great, tuner is always cold and fan is noiseless.

It will be interesting to know which dreambox you use?
I have a dm800 it make no noise at all, only clicking noise from the 2.5 hard disk.

You are right, I forgot to say that it is a cloned DM800 HD PVR.

The fan is only available on cloned DM800HD. There are some tricks for oiling it, but you easily got noise, as it rotates to fast.
The resistor, slow it up, but energy is dissipated through it, that's why you can't use a 1/4 watt.

That is a bit long. Best and easiet thing to do is get a Netboot cooler and place it on top instead of under the box. This was both the hard drive and tuner stay cool. They cost around £2 from e***

you must be very unlucky, I have 2 dm800 clones and both are quiet. although I did buy them very recently so it could be a improved versions.

it is right dream 800 sim 2.01 have un cheap fun cooler but must put some quality oil an after that no big noise.

Yeah, I agree with you, because PC fans can get a little noisy after a short period of time, so it's crucial to lubricate them with a nice oil regularly

Indeed, but almost any fan can be less noisy depending on the rotation speed.
And this is why I proposed this approach with a simple resistor.
My solution works with almost any Fan, and there is no noise at all.

I still find it hard to believe your dm800 fan is noisy, even if it was noisy the TV volume will drown out the fan noise. and it only has a CPU fan and it very tiny.

Same problem (dm800 sim201 dec2010edition) noisy and not cooling enough (hdd tem 40-43 degree),
disconnected internal fan,
got smallest (also cheapest) laptop cooler from supermarket,
put on top over tuner,
now little noise and hdd temp 36-38 degree

Thanks for that tip, got one yesterday £1 from poundland, pulled the plug on the internal fan,Dm800HD sits on top, cant hear a thing and nice and cool

DM800HD Clones have an extremely noisey fan. This is a well known issue.

USB Laptop coolers found on that auction site provide excellent air cooling.

An alternative is to take a usb cable strip the wires down and solder the black and red wires to the black and red wires of a PC fan such as an 80mm fan. i.e black to black and red to red.
With the usb cable you only use the black and red wires. nothing else.
Then you can plug the fan into a usb port and place the fan on top of the box with the air flowing down.

I did this and a PC fan is way quieter than the clone fan. Then again Jumbo jets are quieter than a clone fan.

Surely you don't mean a 120mm fan. Do you mean a 12 volt fan?
