Re: Problem with setting up the gigabit network

... by the way, ( this might be obvious, but, better before than after 2x100km)

is it

pc - pc

or

pc - switch - pc

if so, does the switch really support gbs ?

---

i think the best test meets the simpliest config:

pc - ifcard - connector - cat5e - connector - ifcard - pc

then upgrade, step by step ...

Re: Problem with setting up the gigabit network

It is the simplest possible... PC - PC.
I'm planning to add a third PC in the house and a gigabit switch in the future, but that's another story.

It's a long shot but if it matters (probably don't)... when mobo was killed they couldn't replace the chip but they simply removed it and advised me to buy add-on card if I need to. So atheros network connection in windows is still present but it's hidden as I disabled onboard lan. I can't delete it nor can I unistall atheros drivers. It isn't visible in the device manager but in safe mode it is. I suppose it doesn't affect other networks. I really don't want to reinstall windows, but if everything else fails I'll do it.

... euh windows ?

i see ....

well. let think about this config:

2 pc, 2 live cd ( like mint or knoppix or ubuntu)

and let's go

no install, no win install and
with linux live you've got a safe clear clean and reliable linux os
for further and deeper tests

i just hope your pc are able to boot on cd (ie the linux live cd)

and so, we can see all what about this mess ...

---

you do not need to be and rocket scientist to run live linux
just burn the live cd, boot it, log in as root. and check your system

---

if so, i suggest your the mint kde 32 bits last distro:

__http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

KDE 32-bit An edition featuring the KDE desktop

it's easy,
and funny

just try it !

:)

Re: Problem with setting up the gigabit network

Huh, I could try that but... I have bad experiences with linux and I know nothing about it.
I would't know how to install drivers/setup network... whatever.
Windows is so much familiar to me that it's easier and quicker for me to backup my system with norton ghost and install fresh copy for testing. It's quicker because I would know what I'm doing :).
But anyway it shouldn't be problem with windows, so it's the last option.

noooo ...

just try it
and do what i told you

do not worry about what's ever nightmare about driver

start with one cd, and one pc, on live linux

just like i suggest you

no fear

your win system will not be altered

then, after, you will be able to state whether or not linux is like your immagination tells you ...

Re: Problem with setting up the gigabit network

Hi Gadjan

Maybe it's just a problem of drivers

Did you left the windows to find the drivers or you used the cd that is coming with the card?

It's better to go to the manufacturer's page and download the latest drivers depending on the operation system that you have.

Uninstall the drivers that you have now , reboot and install the new.

Re: Problem with setting up the gigabit network

Windows found the drivers from cd, at first. Then I tried "newer" one from here:
_http://www.tp-link.com/en/support/download/?model=TG-3468&version=V2#tbl_a
But it's the same driver from 2011. I looked at inf file, and also here's the picture

To verify incompatibility between you cards, you can also try to build a loopback plug, like at this link :

---]http://tikkiweb.net/1997/05/make-your-own-ethernet-loopback-connector/

Try it on every ethernet card. The faulty one should connect to itself at 100 mbit.

Your card should have the Realtek 8168C IC.
For an updated driver, look at :

I tried, but it wont uninstall even in safe mode ("Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to boot up the computer."). I think it doesn't matter anyway. It will go away when I reinstall win.

btw your link doesn't work

When the connection is made between the two ports, does the baloon pop up indicating 1Gb link or just the 100Mb link?
Can you screenshot the config of the NIC setup in your OS?
Do you have the power saving and energy efficient modes disabled.
Have you enabled jumbo packets?

Re: Problem with setting up the gigabit network

Here's the epilogue:
Recently I finally took the PC with both cards to my friend's house and we hooked them alternatively to his motherboard using his cable. The conclusion is that my old Airlive card won't negotiate gigabit link, so we eliminated dirty windows, cable and new pci-e card (it works excellent).
It's either hardware fault or some kind of driver problem, but I don't see how any of that can happen :).
It worked until that lightning strike but I asked guys in the repair shop where I took my dead motherboard if they have seen such case and they said no. They have tons of experience in the field (at least 15 years) and their primary job and specialty is motherboard repair so I assume they have worked on huge amount of PCs damaged by lightning.
As for drivers, I tried every version I could find.
