Re: Windows XP gets reprieve for another year
Tried updating XP 2 weeks ago and got a screen from Microsoft saying that there where no further updates and it did not update security essentials will try again tonight to see if it will update direct through the security essentials program.
I have the opposite situation, updates ready to download, which I do,and then install, then told I have been successful, yet the next time I switch on the computer I am informed that updates are available( same ones, as I have taken note of the numbers) been going on for the last month.Have tried all the tricks I can think of to fix this to no avail. Very frustrating.

Mobley, could you try following.

Start cmd(elevated)-->Type in exactly: fsutil resource setautoreset true %systemdrive%\ and press enter.

see if that solve the problem.

I see that Microsoft has made its source code for MS-DOS and Word for Windows available to the public now that XP is coming to a end

Re: Windows XP gets reprieve for another year

In its blogpost, Microsoft warned users to stop using XP to ensure they stay safe.
"The effectiveness of anti-malware solutions on out-of-support operating systems is limited," said Microsoft. "Running a well-protected solution starts with using modern software and hardware designed to help protect against today's threat landscape."
Despite its age, Windows XP has proved to have a long life on desktops in homes and businesses. This led Microsoft to keep selling it long past the date it was due to be removed from shop shelves.
This longevity is partly because of the poor reception that its successor Windows Vista received and because some businesses have found it hard to adapt to the changes introduced in Windows 7 and 8.

Releasing the source code is a double edge sword. Indi developer could develope patches and improvements, or they could be used as trojan horses

If they ever release the source code for XP no pc will be safe.that runs it.
So it looks like the only option is upgrade or go the way of the dinosaurs.

Perhaps Microsoft should turn these products loose, make them open source and leave the care and maintenance of them to people who care enough to do so.
You know that instantly projects would emerge to work on core maintenance and then distros as wildly varied as those you find with Linux would spring up and a whole new ecosystem of computing would emerge.

If they were to do this at this point in time it would cause mayhem for banking and other businesses that are still using XP systems, changing these systems is not going to happen overnight as the workload and cost will be enormous. It would also cause a lot of grief for ordinary users as it would take time to develop and there might not be a lot of interest from developers.

Re: Windows XP gets reprieve for another year

I think there's also an ethical issue here for Microsoft: Millions of people made investments in those products that goes far beyond what they actually paid Microsoft. Those investments involved the integration of the products with their lives, their businesses, their projects and their hobbies. They essentially acquired a new language and a new way of thinking when they picked Windows XP and Office 2003, and now Microsoft is saying they have to learn a whole new language.

Regards

It will never happen all windows progs go back to the same source, so they would leave 7 and 8 open.
Could be wrong on the full effect of this someone with full code writing may give their opinion and clarify.

Re: Windows XP gets reprieve for another year

If Microsoft was to turn these products loose what would be the penalty to the company? Maybe a few lost sales, but the goodwill and good action from doing something so positive and constructive with "lifed-out" product lines would be of enormous benefit to society, not to mention to Microsoft's image.

It's a nice idea, but I doubt whether it will ever happen. While great responsibility might come with great power, not everyone is willing to step up and be counted.

I think that's impossible, cause every Windows OS, like Apple ones, depends on previous ones, and so do patents.
Anyway, I disagree with your idea: in a fair (but not fairy) world companies should do business FAIRLY.
That's enough, everyone should play his role.
