Windows XP gets reprieve for another year

According to a Microsoft Technet blog post : “Updates to Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) for XP will continue until 14th July 2015.”

“They will continue to provide signatures for well-known malicious programs that will help Windows XP spot when viruses. trojans and other cyber-threats try to compromise a PC. The malware-spotting updates will be provided for MSE.”

Apparently, this is to give large corporate companies’ more time to change over to Windows 7 or 8. That’s a load of crap ! They are running scared because, according to research firm Net Applications 30% of desktop (no mention of laptops) computers are still running XP !

A number of large companies will not change over because software applications that they currently run (which were expensive to buy) will no longer be compatible on Windows 7/8.
I too, was hit with this dilemma when I ran Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant. It gave me a list of software on my PC that will not be compatible with Windows 8.

I think I am correct in saying that the only updates that XP has been receiving for the past 6 to 8 months or even longer, have only been security updates.
Anyway, there are plenty of firms on the web that offer Free firewall & Anti Virus software so it looks like I will be looking into that in the near future.

Just as a matter of interest, I was in an NHS hospital last week and they are still using XP. I wonder why ? perhaps their numerous specific types of software are not compatible either !

Maybe not enough buisinesses have migrated to the newer plaforms i.e win7/win8 therefore
support has to continue for goodwill purpose on the part of MS or might end up alienating
    them?

      XP is way to much in use for Microsoft to just give up. They will have to do something proactive in order to minimize XP computers left in use. I just have one thing to say about XP;

May the Force be with you :D

I would like xp to be supported for as long as a good number of pc's use it. But this is really only a sticking plaster. MSE is really only the antivirus/spam/routekit functions, it wouldn't stop say someone finding a new exploit in IE8 or media player and going in through there.

That is a very good measure from banks to do pan. Nothing like that is going to happen here at Norway as of now i see. This will make company's to actively remove xp from their systems.

              hi duhoki

ok true it's a good thing the banks will follow (safety), but lots of clients need to buy new windows version - so happy we still have a year (for me no problem anyway, running XP, Vista Business 64 bit and Win 7 :)).

I think local councils and nhs still run xp because they cannot afford to upgrade

Finally some of the customers from the company I work for (that are mainly hospitals) are migrating from XP to W7. Because of the importance of the software they use they tend to have the attitude of "If it is not broken, do not fix it"

Re: Windows XP gets reprieve for another year

I think it's a very good movement for many companies because they will stay on winxp due to economic crisis as they can't afford the upgrade to other os.
In many countries the banks have winxp on atm's and this upgrade costs too much.

I seem to have read somewhere that Microsoft's own attitude towards MSE was that it was not very effective in relation to other software. I would not be very happy depending on it to keep my computer safe, certainly will not be using mine for any financial business.

                      Regards Mobley3

                          Hi guys

XP was an excellent system, unsurpassed in his day, ... times change and as per what the evolution has made this system superseded and microsoft, support, gives the coup de Grâce. I think windows 7 a great heiress ...windows 8 best leave it alone ...8.1 x be judged too young. on 7 have no doubt refer to him as a worthy heir to the great xp.

Tried updating XP 2 weeks ago and got a screen from Microsoft saying that there where no further updates and it did not update security essentials will try again tonight to see if it will update direct through the security essentials program.

for people still using xp after april end of cycle it's better to use stronger antivirus

instead of mse for maximum protection as far as antivirus can help in such a dead cycle situation.:)
