the warranty is void if win8 is scrapped out of the genuine hd ...[/QUOTE]

You could always change the hard drive and install windows 7 on it then if there was a warranty problem put the old one back in

Well now-days you can use virtual machines also ...
.. easiest way On windows 8 install vmware player, create a virtual win 7, and you have both systems on one machine, ( the PC should have enough processing power and memory for both systems, and the processor should allow virtualisation), (I think in windows 8 you can enable hyper V, where Ms has its own way of virtualisation.. where you can even start windows from virtual disk) ...

What warranty are you talking about?
For win8 ? - you are the owner of a licence to use it and you don't need no other warranty
On PC? Surely you not saying when your HDD "klatz-klatz" , became unreadable you loose warranty? It's hilarious.
You got a sticker on the bottom that says you can use some kind of licence, like home edition.
If you don't like this os - you may kill it forever or temporary - you may install it again any time - you have a right to use it (remember sticker on the bottom).
On the other hand you have no right to use previous windows version on this PC.
So the exit - install modern linux distro.
Me myself need windows for some apps.
I got a modern PC with 8 GB of mem
              So I found a solution - UBUNTU 10.04LTS 64 bit.
I use it for every task I can load.
For tasks I cannot load UBUNTU, I installed VMWare Player, raised virtual PC with 1 processor and 2GB of Mem and installed XP.
              That's all.
Ubuntu is monstrous enough, pretty much like modern windows. But it has a BIG advantage - it's absolutely free.

                ..Besit is right..
You can stop using the software that came with your pc or laptop...
(unless you build your own PC..)
but you should remember that when you bought a new computer
You payed for windows OS whether you like it or not M$ got its share from you
(I remember there was a case somewhere, where somebody bought a laptop and didn't accept the licence agreement on Windows install...
went to the store where he bought it and got a refund for the part of the licence,,
Don't really know if and where that trick could work - it would be nice to have about 100 € cheaper laptops)

The laptop and my company sells many have two options, with the operating system preinstalled, or to choose the system clean.

                    Re: Windows 8

Win7 support will last at least 5 years, Win XP support was extended due to the rise of netbooks, most of which wouldn't run Vista and so shipped with XP, which are deliberately being killed off as they offer little profit.
You can kind of build a laptop ,if you know where to get a shell system, you can then add a sdd/hdd , memory , cpu , sometimes a screen ,optical drive, however laptops are fiddly and a pain to work on.

                        Re: Windows 8

When you buy a pc or laptop with windows installed, it does not cost the supplier the same as the punter, they get the version to put on the systems they are selling for peanuts prob £5 to £10 so if you went for your money back if you did not want windows after you have purchased it would cost you more money than you would get back for your time and expenses.
How many people get a windows cd or dvd when they purchase I would say none because they only have one copy for all there pc's that they build and pay a royalty per unit.
It may be different with win 8, but if you cant put a copy on your pc for free it is time to bin your pc, and buy a abacus.

It always comes back to the pre-installation on a partition, which while not eliminated partitions, you can always recover
