    best image for a newbie?

Hi all. Had an offer accepted on fleabay for a genuine vu duo.
question is, bearing in mind this is my first foray into the world of linux based sat receivers, whats the best image?
The seller flashes the receiver with your choice of image, so which is the easiest, most user friendly image to get me started?
    Blackhole, vix?
    Thanks all

Hi bokkie as I said in your previous post only got mine last week non clone same as yours.
So far I have tried Vix latest very user friendly but I had crash problems when changing cams I moved on to Black hole possibly more stable and I liked the look of the mediatomb feature, but I play alot of music files and the media player in my opinion is very non user friendly as are the menus. Overall for the first image, with my limited experience I would go for Vix. I am going to try VTI & PLI next so I will let you know. Don't forget to read the release notes some of the images require a bootloader upgrade.

Good luck and if you need any help just ask.

    Regards nml

Thanks for that. I wouldn't be playing music files on it as i have an htpc for that.
Do you reckon black hole is easier to get the hang of? It all seems a bit daunting for a newbie like myself.

With any image it takes time to get used to the menus and to find the things you want.

I started with Vix and like NML would get frequent crashes which got to be very annoying. Switched to BlackHole and am very happy with it - can't remember the last time I got a green screen.

The VU media player is not that great, but that's not its main function which is a satellite receiver. I use the Project Valerie plugin which collates all my recordings on the HDD and movies on my NAS into a single place, with movie posters and backdrops and an EPG type description fopr each movie/recording.

My advice would be try VIX and BH for a few days each and see which you prefer.

The seller preinstalls the image of your choice. Think I'll go with Black hole.
Sounds like project Valerie Plugin is similar to XBMC which I have installed on my HTPC.
It downloads posters, info, etc from The net. Really handy.

I have currently the VTI Image present.
All is easy to use to install from a usb stick.
sometimes it needs to install before you flash the image a BOOTLOADER because of the size of your Image.

Just install the Bootloader before you install the Image.

I would definitely try the BH image, it has been very stable for me and I have had no issues with it at all... the latest one
