Is this very easy to do and what does this allow me to do?

It's pretty straightforward.

When you log onto the net, you get an IP address (eg, 1.2.3.4). This can change each time you log onto the net. So most routers can access a dyndns account, what happens is the router gets it's IP address, then tells dyndns what that IP address is. Now instead of telling others that you are on 1.2.3.4, you can say that you are at username.dyndns.org.

When someone tries to ping/connect to username.dyndns.org, they will be re-directed to 1.2.3.4 (or whatever the current IP address you have is).

Does this make sense?

It does kinda make sense. I need to set one up and then give my peers details of my dyndns account, which they then access which will then be diverted to my existing IP address.
Once this happens, does "sharing" occur?
Sorry, but this is still all too new for me.
Now to figure out porting and newcamd.

If you know for sure you are going to have a static IP address, you do not need a dyndns account (as the IP will not be changing). But it does make sense to use one in case it changes, or if you move ISP etc.

Once you've set up a dyndns account you then need to configure both the router and your receiver to share.

I see you have a spiderbox from the other thread.

If the default newcamd port is 3567 (from the other thread), then you need to forward port 3567 from your router to the IP address of the spiderbox.

So then if users connect to yourname.dyndns.org and to port 3567, they will first connect to your router IP, and the router will direct all traffic to the spiderbox.

Hi Tony,

It looks "simple" enough, as the spiderbox is quite user friendly.
I will give it a go tonite or sometime this weekend and see.
I am just scared I am going to totally stuff up and then I will be eligible for hackers to break into my system - not good.
If I do manage all this, can I start "sharing" a local card (if I get one that is).

It's easily done. But as long as you only open up the single port you need to you should be ok. If your router supports it, you can also set up rules to block all network traffic between your internal network and the server.
