I wanted to switch from wired to wireless networking for my STB since its in a different room to my router.

Do you guys tend to use homeplugs or a wireless extender plugged into the STB. I guess both are valid options but I wondered if the performance of the wireless was an issue for sharing...

Hi mate

I have used in the past a homeplug supporting networking over existing home electrical wiring without serious problem in cs.
I tried wi-fi with a box but I had many problems and delays.
Now, I use only cables because is more safe and stable.

I use homeplugs and find them very easy to use and very reliable.

I use both powerline (router to box) and wifi (router to range extender for lan in another house next to mine).
No problems in cs.

I agree 100%.
I use cables for everything I can: it's more stable, as you said.
Sometimes I'd like even to return to wired mouse...when for some reasons it's freaking out and I have to switch it off and on or unplug its USB receiver...probably it's not a good one

I fully agree with it. I myself use only cables. And for all things.

I did wanna try wireless connections
(mouse, keybord, things for my satellite, ...)
It's by all the same, sometimes interupptions, connection problems,
I'm fully sick of it.

Therefor, I still use only trusted cables for everything.
And I will always look after well known names of these,
specially those, who have a high reputation.

I don't mind, going back to the past, to do things the old way.
Say what you wanna say, at least they worked for a long time.

If keeping wires is not an option for you, both alternatives are good and effective for cs.
But if you go for wireless and you are sleeping in the same room where is router, I would switch it off when it's not needed.
There is still a debate if radio waves are harmful for human health or not and, expecially if there are babies around, I wouldn't use wireless 24/24.

Best cables then homeplugs and last wireless. you should not have any problems with the first 2 options.

I personally do not recommend wireless networking.
Especially in cities, WI-FI very noisy. For quality and stable connection, use a cable networking.

If your home not allow other solution for networking,
wi-fi or homeplugs can be used,
but if you have the chance to select between wirelees or cables,
without any doubt , wi-fi must be avoided and cables should be used.

fully agree: if possible use cabe - will take one some time to install, but really worth it!

but sometimes it's more difficult - I have an ip-camera, but distance is about 40-50 metres and through different buildings ... used to work with homeplugs, wifi never worked.

I always use wired never any problems with connections.
Not happy using homeplugs they generate interference.

I also use wired, hopefully when Wireless IEEE 802.11ac is more mainstream, wireless will be a viable option for home networking.

I wanted to get the new Asus AC router, but couldn't find a mini pci card for 802.11ac anywhere!

My old wireless solution was ok for general networking, but streaming HD usually caused a few issues unless i used 5ghz

I use wired its the best option every day of the week if you are able to use it.

I read that if your house has been wired with separate ring mains for upstairs and downstairs plugs that that homeplugs will not work with one downstairs and another upstairs?
