    Mesh or solid

Ok. I've been reading through this section about LNBs and dish sizes and just wondered what people's experiences of mesh dishes were.

I'm assuming they're a bit easier to install (because of weight)? But what about signal and long term issues?

    Any thoughts?

should not think signal any different between mesh or solid, our friend digicon on here would know best, mesh better if dish is sited in a windy position.

      Re: Mesh or solid

I asked this question on another forum a while ago and just about everyone said the same thing.
Doesn't make any noticeable difference. I believe it's because the beam is wider than the perforation in the dish so there is no signal loss at all.
It can be more beneficial in a high wind area or a very visible area.
Mesh is a bit easier on the eye than a solid dish, and a good compromise for the mrs.
I have a mesh dish by the way.

        I can confirm the above.
I have a sly zone 2 mesh dish, installed on a corner of the property. The side of the property acts like a wind tunnel.

I think especially if you're going over about 1 metre, a perforated dish will make a big difference in windy areas.
Also means less trips up the ladder to realign the dish everytime you get a bit of wind. Basically your typical british summer.

And also lighter for carrying up the ladder,i have a solid 1.2 mtr dish and its very heavy more strain on the motor also.

So it would make sense for anyone considering a motorised dish to have mesh dish.
Would that mean with a mesh dish a smaller powered motor will be able to do the job?

                  Thanks fellas.
That's about what I thought, but nice to hear there's no concerns about signal loss...and keeping the missus happy? Got to be priority number one!

If your mesh gets damaged like mine, by night-owl, it cannot be replaced. I could not find any replacement mesh panels anywhere and was advised to buy new dish.

I can't even begin to think how that happened...unless perhaps you had mice nesting in the LNB holder?

Unless you go for a a large petallised dish I think mesh dishes over 80 cm are hard to come by new. I have an ancient 1.2 wineguard ( USA ) Inc mount over £300 12 years or so ago.

Yes that's true, not many mesh dishes around, which is a pity as they are a great option.
Technomate and iss make larger mesh dishes, if you were looking.

Mesh dishes were really popular in the old C band days, they were cheaper too and lighter to move them maunally. Later on Solid dish took over and people started buying big solid dishes. They were replacing an 8 foot mesh dish with a 6 foot solid dish.
