    0.3-0.4m dish

just wondering if anyone can give me a idea of what satellites other than sky uk i might be able to pick up with this size of dish from central Scotland, the reason i ask is aldi are selling the dish and box for £30-£40 so might be cheap way for me to test other satellites apparently it comes with a dish aligner of some sort, but at the price i assume it will be all crap stuff but might be worth it for messing about

Astra 19.2E & Hotbird 13E are both pretty strong birds in the UK. I did a similar thing to you when I first started messing about with sat gear, though a few miles further south than you. You should easily find both of these, your problem with a dish that size will be rain fade, but if you just want to experiment it's a cheap way to start.

I started with a similar kit from B&Q, now I have a zone 2 sky dish focused on 19.2e customised with octo lnb for 28.2e & quad lnbs for 19.2e & 13e plus a 90cm Triax dish with dual lnb for 9e. My neighbours think I'm mad!

Starting from east to west on that size dish 52.5,45,42,39,28.2,19.2,13.0,9.0,4.8,0.8,5,8,30 could be a few more as well but also realise that some TP's will be out of range for that size dish

You should try get a bigger dish, especially in central scotland. And rather than getting one from Aldi get a triax. Really good dishes.

So have you got a receiver already that's not a Sky digibox? I found the cheap one that came with my B&Q kit didn't support DVB-S2 so I could get a lad of channels I was after, bought an OenBox S10 in the end.

As already mentioned, if you are serious then you probably are better off spending the money on a bigger dish. I scrapped my B&Q kit after a few weeks. I bought a Triax TD88 on eBay (~£30 but usually more like £50), wall mount £10, Smart Titanium dual lnb £15 & OpenBox S10 for £50. It soon starts to add up!

I doubt very much you will get Saorsat in Scotland!? I think you can just get it on the west coast of Wales only as the footprint is so tight.

Central Scotland is a long long way from the Republic of Ireland compared to the west coast of Wales. I would be extremely impressed if you got it to work, if you do please let us know!

I'd think at least a 1 metre dish in central scotland to be worth your while.
Maybe a td 110 or even slightly bigger.
But if you just want to mess about and see what you can locate

What are the planning permission rules in Scotland, are they the same as in England? In England if you live in a standard two storey house, less than 50ft tall, then you can't have a dish over 1m. If you have a TV aerial on your house as well then the dish can't be over 60cm!

Just thought I'd mention it. Personally I have two tv aerials, a 90cm dish and a 60cm zone 2 mini dish, oops, maybe I'll get a letter from the council one day!

                      Re: 0.3-0.4m dish

I've read somewhere that the max size without planning permission in Scotland is 90cm.
Not sure if they have increased this though as it was a thread from a couple of years ago.
if you are an immigrant you are also allowed a bigger dish to receive tv from your home country.

Can you suggest any place other that ebay i could try get a cheap type of dish the bigger the better, really looking to get a biggest cheap dish i can ie if 1m dish is £50 and 1.2m is £55 and 1.5 is £10 i will go with 1.2m

as far as i know the limit is 1m on the house but ground mounted there no planning required unless going to be over 6ft and then you need it just like anything you build over 6ft

my opinion: the bigger, the better (sure need to be well fixed - ref. wind or other weather conditions) - to have an idea of what you can receive you can ****** eg 'sat beams'

Try and avoid ebay if you can. I have heard lots of stories of people buying on ebay and recieving the dish with dents and dings in it from being badly packaged.
Rather pay a couple of quid more and get it from a reputable dealer or buy from a local supplier.
Maybe even call a couple installers and ask if they can sell dishes as well.
