If you hear Ku Band, C Band and L band being discussed and wonder what on earth people are talking about then fear not, it isn't some special code. Radio & Satellite frequency bands are both Historic Radar bands and ITU definitions and they are given letters to represent bands of frequencies.

Satellite Frequency Bands

L BAND 1 - 2 GHZ MOBILE SERVICES [ Mostly used for Intermediate (IF) frequencies ]
( 950 - 1750 MHz is the Tx Band and 950 - 1900 MHz is the Rx Band )

S BAND 2.5 - 4 GHZ MOBILE SERVICES
( Not used apart from satellite control links & HAM radio. )

C BAND 3.7 - 7 GHZ FIXED SERVICES
( 5.7-6.725 GHz is the Tx Band [Linear] and 3.625-4.2 GHz is the Rx Band [circular] also 5.85-6.425 GHz is the Tx Band [cirular] )

X BAND 7.25 - 12 GHZ MILITARY
( 7.25 to 7.75 is the Rx Band and 7.9 to 8.4 is the Tx Band all circular )

Ku BAND 10 - 14 GHZ FIXED SERVICES
( 13.75 - 14.5 GHz is the linear Tx Band and 10.7 - 12.75 GHz is the linear Rx Band )

Ka BAND 18 - 30.4 GHZ FIXED SERVICES
( 27.5 - 31 GHz is the Tx Band [linear] and 19.7 - 20.2 GHz is the Rx Band [circular] also 29.5 - 30 GHz is the Tx Band [circular] )

V BAND 37.5 - 50.2 GHZ FIXED SERVICES
( New - not widely used yet - maybe used instead of Ka Band in the future. )

Fixed Satellite Service- FSS, 11.7 - 12.2 GHz

Part of the Ku-band spectrum used for Fixed Satellite Service. Virtually every dish in the 1 meter to 1.7 meter size is used for FSS band reception. FSS satellites can be spaced 2 degrees apart, which limits their maximum power output to avoid adjacent satellite interference. Today the FSS band is used by Hughesnet ,and Starband for satellite internet. Free-To-Air (FTA) satellite systems also use the FSS band. The FSS band is also used for transmitting television shows, back haul feeds for remote news broadcast and many more companies for various data/video transmissions.


Direct Broadcast Satellite - DBS 12.2 - 12.7 GHz

The Broadcast Satellite sub-band of the Ku-band is commonly called the DBS band. The D in DBS is sometimes called Digital, and others will say it means Direct. Some consider this band to be called the BSS band for Business Satellite Service. That is not correct. BSS is a term used to describe a type of service and not the actually band of frequencies used to deliver that service. We will call this the DBS Band because we like DBS, no other reason.

The DBS band is reserved for high powered satellites intended for the delivery of digital television. DIRECTV and DISH Network are DBS Satellite system providers. DBS Satellites are spaced 9 degrees apart. The wide spacing of DBS satellites allow for very high powered transmissions which results in the ability to use a small 18" dish.

S-band Frequency List

S-band is that part of the frequency spectrum between 2 GHz and 4 GHz. Many satellites transmit at S-band frequencies. This S-band catalogue includes a significant number of satellites in geosynchronous orbit and a quantity in inclined, highly eccentric orbits (HEOs). However, it is much used for low orbiting satellites also.

Satellite S Band Radio Frequency Table

This service is the frequency chart for the Satellite Band Radio Service. At present, there are two players in the business, Sirius Satellite Radio , formerly CD-Radio, and XM Satellite Radio.
