Whatever happened squariels ?

The squariel / squarial was introduced by BSB about 20 years ago . Unlike obtrusive looking satellite dishes , they were flat , small and pleasing to the eye . It's a real shame that they have not become mainstream , especially now with higher powered satellites in orbit .

I can only guess that they went out with analogue.
I think they'd have to be modified to receive anything nowadays due to the higher range of frequencies with digital tv.

They were certainly a better looking arrangement than the hordes of Sly dishes you see nowadays. Somewhere in the back of my mind I seem to remember reading an article in a magazine on how to retune them for different frequencies, but as they were built in the analogue days I doubt they would be suitable for modern receivers.

Yes Bokkie , the original squarial would most certainly need to be modded as it used a different frequency .

It's quite amazing though that a manufacturer 20 years later hasn't fabricated a flat panel aerial suitable for digital signals , especially for providers who want to keep a tight footprint .

There are some flat plate antenni available from the likes of german supplier Kathrein and I think a few others but I think they are mainly geared to camping and not really in the mainstream. I stand to be corrected on this. They are also rather expensive in comparison to normal dishes and this is possibly why they are not more readily available.

I've just searched Kathrein and found a flat antenna priced at a whopping £146

As expensive as it is , it could mean the difference between planning / landlord allowing someone have satellite reception or not .

It is very useful if you can not install an usual antenna because of your neighbors.




The flat plate equivalent to 60 cms. diameter is about 90 euros expensive. And noise rate is 0,8 db.

i can remember the The squariel but only just i had sly installed in 1992 and its was a 60cm mesh dish
