                        Nine Months (Film)
Hugh Grant plays child psychiatrist Samuel Faulkner who, ironically, can't stand children. So when his girlfriend Rebecca tells him she's pregnant, he's less than thrilled and eventually, fed up with his moaning, she moves out to stay with her friends Marty and Gail. This being a Chris Columbus film, it all ends happily but not without complications along the way, in particular from Robin Williams as a Russian obstetrician who is prone to malapropisms and hasn't actually delivered a baby before.
                        Director: Chris Columbus
Starring: Hugh Grant, Julianne Moore, Tom Arnold, Joan Cusack, Jeff Goldblum, Robin Williams

                        Synecdoche, New York (Film)
Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut, a comedy drama, stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as Caden Cotard, a frustrated theatre director so bound up in his own work and failings he almost doesn't notice his wife Adele leaving him. When an unexpected grant of $500,000 allows him to realise his dream; he rents a cavernous warehouse and sets about rehearsing a play based on his life and the world around him, with sets modelled on New York and a script comprising of gnomic post-it notes. But will the play ever reach its first night? Kaufman's film is an almost Bergmanesque meditation on life and death which, as with his scripts for Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Being John Malkovich, refuses to kowtow to convention but by its very subversion, provides a fascinating, challenging viewing experience. Includes some strong language.
                        Director: Charlie Kaufman
Starring: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Sadie Goldstein, Tom Noonan, Peter Friedman, Charles Techman

                        Melinda and Melinda (Film)
Woody Allen's bittersweet drama stars Radha Mitchell in two roles but both as the eponymous Melinda. One Melinda is the neighbour of indie filmmaker Susan and her 'resting' actor husband Hobie, whom Melinda tempts towards *****ery. The other Melinda is friends with Laura and her alcoholic husband Lee, a serial *****erer with designs on Melinda. Playing one set of circumstances for comedy and the other for tragedy, and cutting between the two scenarios throughout, the film is a fascinating study of characters, and keeps the viewer guessing until the very end.
                        Director: Woody Allen
Starring: Wallace Shawn, Neil Pepe, Stephanie Roth Haberle, Larry Pine, Radha Mitchell, Michael J. Farina

                          The Undefeated (Film)
John Wayne and Rock Hudson star in Andrew V McLaglen's western as Union Colonel John Thomas and Confederate Colonel James Langdon, who clash in the dog days of the Civil War and, after the truce is agreed, take different paths. Inevitably, their paths cross again and, somewhat reluctantly, they join forces to stop Maximillian's plans for conquest. The film suffered from being released in the same year as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Wild Bunch and Wayne in Oscar-winning form in True Grit, but it stands alongside them, with a panoramic sweep of a story and two leads who successfully spark off each other.

Don Siegel's classic of post-war paranoia still has the power to chill, as the residents of the small Californian town of Santa Mira start telling doctor Miles Bennell that their loved ones aren't quite the same any more. As he and his fiancée Becky Briscoll investigate, they discover a horrifying truth - an alien invasion is using large seed-like pods to replicate the townspeople who become devoid of human emotion as the first part of a plan to eventually take over the world. As more and more of their friends and family are taken over, they try to escape but as they flee, Miles realises that he is terrifyingly alone.

Frank Launder's film, co-scripted with Sidney Gilliat, is set in 1944 in a Nazi-run French internment camp for British women caught up in the invasion of Europe. Newcomers Patricia Roc, Phyllis Calvert, Jean Kent, Flora Robson and Muriel Aked are soon involved in the camp's dramas, including the hiding and smuggling out to safety of downed British pilots before they can cause emotional problems among the love-starved women. To make matters worse, there is a Nazi spy in their midst, who must be unmasked before she reveals their plans. A wartime morale booster emphasising the role of women in the conflict, the film maintains its tension throughout, while the ensemble cast is a who's who of British actresses of the day.

                                Equilibrium (Film)
In the near future, following WWIII, the population of the nation of Libria must take the drug Prozia II to suppress the emotions their ruler Dupont believes caused the war. To prevent violation of the law, enforcement officers called Grammatons punish anyone that shows signs of emotion. But when one of them, John Preston, forgets his dose, the scales fall from his eyes and he discovers a rebel group who have kept art and literature alive. However, they are under threat; can he help them survive? Kurt Wimmer's sci-fi film, like Fahrenheit 451, concentrates primarily on raising moral and ethical issues, although there are also spectacular Gun-Kata fights, where special techniques allow combatants to anticipate the path of bullets and avoid them. Contains violence.

                                The Machinist (Film)
Brad Anderson's stark drama stars Christian Bale as Trevor Reznik, a factory machinist who accidentally maims a colleague. He becomes convinced he's the victim of a secret conspiracy and retreats into himself, eating nothing, not sleeping and becoming more and more paranoid. In spite of Reznik's physical and mental state, both call girl Stevie and coffee shop waitress Marie take an interest in him, and slowly he reveals incidents both in his past and at work that have made him what he is. Bale, who lost 63lbs to play the skeletal Reznik, conveys the anguish of a tortured man who lives a life of continual despair, in fear of enemies who may or may not be tangible. Violence/strong language.
