The movies-on-demand subscription service PictureBox has acquired the on-demand rights in Poland to more than 30 films from The Walt Disney Company EMEA.

PictureBox, which is wholly owned by Universal Pictures, was launched in 2006 and is currently offered by the DTH platform n in Poland. It is also available in the UK and Singapore and will be expanded in due course to other territories.

The films covered by the agreement with The Walt Disney Company EMEA include three from the Pirates of the Caribbean series, The Incredibles, Armageddon, National Treasure, Face/Off and Pretty Woman.

Canal Digital has signed a new distribution agreement with TV2 that secures the Premier League for its Norwegian subscribers over the next three years. The English football competition had been a fixture of the schedules for long-time partner Canal+ until the TV4-owned paycaster was outbid in the 2010-13 rights round.

Following the agreement TV2’s three Premier League channels will be available in HD for both cable and satellite customers.

“We have with TV2 for a long time and we are now pleased to have come up with a comprehensive solution that both parties are happy with,” said Svein Erik Davidsen, managing director, Canal Digital Norway. “We have always distributed the Premier League and it’s a proud football tradition that we are now able to continue”.

Following its acquisition of the Norwegian rights in a deal brokered by Medge Consulting, which had purchased the rights for the Nordic region, TV2 created three 24-hour channels using Premier League material that will show live and recorded matches plus feature items.

After Canal+ lost the Premier League rights, it has been working with its partner and now part owner Canal Digital to promote other parts of the schedule that includes La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Allsvenskan, Copa América and the Carling Cup.

3D/HD ups and downs in Russia

Russia is making good progress in the introduction of 3D while at the same time falling behind in the take-up of HD services.

The DTH platform NTV-Plus says that it will broadcast no fewer than seven matches from the closing stages of this year’s World Cup in 3D, starting with the quarter finals on July 2 and 3. The quarter finals will be shown in the October cinema in Moscow and the remaining matches in six cinemas forming part of the Karo Film network, again in Moscow. Tickets will cost from R900 (€23.5) up to R1,500, in the latter instance for the final.

NTV-Plus broadcast the Champions League final in 3D in May and plans to launch a channel in the format.

In the meantime, AKTR and RBC report that despite the widespread deployment of HD-ready sets in Russia, only around 60-70,000 viewers pay to watch HD channels.

In the case of the Moscow-based cable operator Akado, around a third of its digital subscribers have HD-ready sets, while only 14,000 watch HD channels. However, take-up is being driven by sport, with the World Cup coverage playing a significant role.

ONO becomes latest TiVo customer

TiVo is to become the exclusive software provider on all next generation set-top boxes to be deployed by the Spanish cableco ONO. Like Virgin Media, which announced a similar agreement earlier this year, ONO plans to offer its subscribers a seamless convergence between the internet and linear television content.

Likewise, ONO becomes an exclusive distributor of the TiVo technology, which will be supplied with both PVR and non-PVR devices. The two companies will then work together on the development of applications for the Spanish marketplace. According to Rosalía Portela, the CEO of ONO, “Working with a strategic partner of the stature of TiVo, a pioneer and innovator in the development of a converged recording system and in the implementation of a new model of television in other countries, allows us to make the leap to launching the next generation of TV in the market. Our fibre optic network combined with the capacity of TiVo will position us at the cutting edge of advanced next generation services for the Internet and Television.”

Customers will be able to use TiVo’s software to search for a potentially limitless array of content. They will also enjoy features family to TiVo subscribers in the United States, such as Season Pass and WishList searches.

“We are extremely proud to be selected as ONO’s strategic partner for its next generation video experience and believe that together we can offer the most compelling video product in the Spanish marketplace,” said Tom Rogers, President and CEO of TiVo Inc. “Building on our recent announcement with Virgin Media in the UK, this deal demonstrates the growing proliferation of TiVo as the most compelling solution for television providers seeking to differentiate their service through a best-in-class user experience and a world of content that integrates broadcast and broadband television to go well beyond the confines of traditional pay television.”

ONO and TiVo will also be working with other technology providers including Nagravision and Cisco on the implementation of the TiVo platform. Nagravision may be sorry that it was unable to convince ONO of the merits of its OpenTV middleware. It has already lost out to *** in the deployment of Liberty Global/UPC’s next generation devices.

ONO was an early Liberate customer, but more recently has opted for a Mirada developed EPG that ran on Motorola set-top boxes.

Globo tests Internet catch up for TV

The Brazilian broadcasting TV station Globo is trying to offer its content through Internet in new TV sets with IP connection and a free-to-air TV like quality. The channel has already presented a trial broadcasting using 2 Mbps bandwidth. With such technology, TV Globo is getting ready to offer services such as catch up TV and VOD.

The technology Director of the company, Fernando Bitterncourt, pointed out that the business model had not been defined yet, and that, so far, only the technology was being tested. However, hementioned the possibility to offer catch up TV, "which enables the user to recover missed chapters of a series or soap opera". The broadcasting company has already presented this project at a press event where broadcasting via Internet was carried out in an LG device.

According to the Engineering Director of the channel, Raymundo Barros, "Globo does not think low quality video broadcasting will succeed in big screens". That is the reason why, they are focused on "guaranteeing a quality the closest to free-to-air TV quality".

The Argentine Free-to-air DTH service will include 16 channels

The President of Argentine Radio and Television, Tristán Bauer, confirmed that the public free-to-air DTH system, which in 2012 will complement ISDB-T coverage in such country, will offer 16 TV channels, some of them public and others private, generalist, national movies, children, sport, science and educating.

"From the technical to the ideological conception, the system is open to a limited channel package", the officer told newspaper Página 12. The model will be made up by "a generalist channel (Channel 7, TV Pública) and other experimental channels of specific thematic". At present, the system contemplates Channel 7, Encuentro and Radio Nacional. Within the next months, "the children channel Paka Paka, which is the most advanced one, a science channel and a national movie channel will be added". Likewise, a sport channel integrally produced by Channel 7 will be developed.

Since the official project was released, Pay-TV market representatives have expressed their worries regarding such initiative. "The Government will compete with cable TV from the State", stated several times the President of the Argentine Association of cable TV, Walter Burzaco. Bauer recognized that satellite TV is currently seen as "a threat", but pointed out that "both systems will coexist. The public will have a great content and technical quality, and the Pay system will offer more services and options that those offered today".

3D TV is 'not a gimmick': Sky COO

3D TV will not be a passing fad and is being incorrectly dismissed, according to Mike Darcey, COO of UK pay TV operator, Sky.

Speaking at the IEA Future of Broadcasting Conference in London, Darcey said that the continued growth of the pay TV sector was dependant on such innovations.

“Some people are not convinced about 3D, believing it to be a passing fad, a bit of a gimmick,” he said. “That’s fair enough, and they are entitled to their view. But I suspect that they are roughly the same industry sages who were questioning the significance of HD in the not too distant past. That time around, while many in the industry were sceptical, Sky took an early bet on HD and we bet big. So far, we’ve invested around US $750 million to build Europe’s leading HD offering.”

Darcey also dismissed claims that sport was the sole driver of the pay TV industry.

“Looking towards sustaining pay-TV success longer-term, it’s not just about sport. Yes, it continues to be an important piece of the pay TV jigsaw. And yes, it was the infamous ‘battering ram’ for pay-TV in its infancy, when it needed to assert itself on the UK broadcasting landscape. But the world has long since moved on – and although sports is still a major part of what helps define our service, there are many people for whom Sky Sports is not the only factor in their decision to subscribe,” claimed Darcey, adding that the English Premier League – the centre-piece of its sports line-up – accounted for just five percent of viewing on the platform.
