French pay-TV group Canal+ will not strengthen its football offer with the French League Cup as their TV rights are being kept by FTA group France Télévisions for the 2012-2016 season.
As in the past years, France 2, France 3 and France 4 will broadcast live at least 16 matches.
At the same time, Canal+ is again being challenged by upcoming Qatar channel Al-Jazeera Sports over French League 1 TV rights. The French professional football league LFP has entered into exclusive negotiations with Al-Jazeera for the attribution of League 1 matches for the 2012-2016 period. An agreement should be finalised by 31 January.
Those matches used to be broadcast on Canal+ PPV channel Foot+. In a first round against Al-Jazeera, Canal+ already lost part of the League 1 first choice matches and the biggest games in the Champions League for the 2012-2015 period.
