Astra pulls plug on erotic channels
More than 30 erotic TV channels which can be received unencrypted by DTH satellite households in Germany and throughout Europe on Astra (19.2° East), are about to lose their distribution platform.
The German media authorities' youth protection commission has succeeded in convincing satellite operator SES Astra to voluntarily relinquish transmitting the channels, reports German news magazine Focus.
According to the agreement, SES Astra will not allow new unencrypted *** channels to appear on its satellites while letting existing contracts expire by the end of 2011. In the media authorities' view, the channels which promote calls to premium erotic telephone services 24 hours per day by showing erotic images violate Germany's youth protection laws.
The media authorities haven't been able to interfere for years as the channels are licensed abroad.
