Allan Dwan was one of the few directors who mastered the art of making B-movies look better than plot or budget allowed. In this thriller, Dwan's final film, Ray Milland plays Nardo Denning, a crook who needs to smuggle his cash into Mexico. His ticket over the border is his ex-girlfriend Margaret who is married to border guard Ben Cameron, but as the trio set out into the mountains and deserts, Cameron uses his knowledge of the territory to outwit the murderous Denning.

The only hope lies in a crack team of scientists burrowing to the core and re-starting Earth's engine. But is the disaster natural or is there a more sinister explanation? Jon Amiel's science-fiction blockbuster eschews outer space for inner-space in this taut special-effects extravaganza. Edited for language.

Expect the usual mad gross-out japes, from making snow cones out of urine to taking a dump in display toilets in bathroom outlets, from racing golf carts over hallowed greens to tightrope walking over alligators; nothing is too extreme. The very harmlessness of it all makes it less cruel and at times very, very funny.
