    The second World Cup semi-final was watched by nearly 9m viewers on Wednesday evening, according to overnight audience figures.

    Coverage of Spain's victory against Germany averaged 8.89m (38.4%) for BBC One between 7pm and 10pm. A further 777k (3.4%) watched the game on BBC HD.

    ITV's docu-soap The Lakes brought in 2.45m (11.3%) between 7.30pm and 8pm, before an episode of Midsomer Murders averaged 3.31m (13.5%) from 8pm.

    The latest episode of Big Brother took just 1.58m (6.5%) for Channel 4 in the earlier timeslot of the 8pm hour. However, a further 383k (1.6%) watched the show on Channel 4 +1.

    Also on Channel 4, The *** Education Show: Am I Normal? brought in 2.3m (9.4%) from 8pm and 483k (2.7%) on timeshift, which was the fourth largest multichannel audience of the night.

    The programme was followed by Desperate Housewives, which took 1.48m (8.2%) in the 10pm hour and 132k (1.4%) on Channel 4 +1.

    A repeat of Mary Queen Of Shops averaged 1.17m (5.7%) for BBC Two in the 7pm hour, before The Private Life Of Cows took 1.57m (6.4%) from 8pm.

    Documentary In Loving Memory, which focused on the personal stories behind roadside accident memorials, was watched by 840k (3.4%) in the 9pm hour.

    Secrets Of The Jesus Tomb appealed to 511k (2.1%) for Five in the 8pm hour, and NCIS secured 1.57m (6.4%) between 9pm and 10pm.

    New crime drama series K-Ville averaged 627k (6.1%) for Five in the 11pm hour, up 225k week-on-week.

    Overall, BBC One dominated primetime with a share of 35.5% against ITV1's 14.1%. Channel 4 came in third with 6.7% (+1: 1.1%), followed by BBC Two with 4.9% and Five with 4%.

    Elsewhere, an episode of animated comedy Family Guy pulled in 719k (6.8%) on BBC Three from 11pm, which was the largest multichannel audience of the evening.
