Italy: 'Merge network plans' says regulator
Rose Major
Chairman of Italy’s communciations regulator AGCOM has called on the country’s telecoms operators to invest in a single next-generation broadband network for the country and to scrap plans for two separate sets of infrastructure.
In his annual speech to Italy’s parliament, Corrado Calabro urged the government to guide and regulate a single project, rather than see billions wasted investing in two separate projects.
A consortium of second-tier operators including FastWeb, Tiscali and Vodafone, plan to build one network to 15 cities by 2015, while incumbent Telecom Italia plans a high-speed network servicing half the country by 2018.
Corrado also said revenues in the television sector rose 1.7% in 2009, with pay-TV revenues up 7.4% to €2.88 billion. However, total advertising sales fell 9.3% to €3.54 billion.
Sky Italia once again outshone major commercial broadcaster Mediaset, with revenues of €2.71 billion in 2009 (of which 90% came from subscriptions), compared with Mediaset’s €2.51 billion. But state broadcaster RAI outshone both, with sales of €2.73 billion (although 60% came from licence fees).
Mediaset Premium, the company’s pay-DTT arm, accounted for about 12% of Mediaset’s revenues.
