Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) was good for Spanish pay-TV in 2009 according to the latest report by the Telecommunications Market Commission (CMT). However the current economic crisis has affected telecommunications and the audiovisual sector according to the study.
The report states good growth in the access to broadband through mobile networks and also a big battle among the mobile telephony operators.
In particular the audiovisual sector was "clearly affected" in 2009 due to a decrease in advertising receipts which is the main income source of free-to-air television, down 21%. Total revenues of the audiovisual sector decreased 12% last year, reaching €5991.1 million.
The pay-TV segment registered a downturn in its revenues of 14% on the previous year, pulling in a total of €1,788 million last year. Downturn in revenues from pay-per-view fare was even higher, falling from €243 million in 2008 to €129 million last year.
At the end of last year, a total of 4,232,792 homes subscribed to pay-TV in Spain - meaning nine subscribers per every 100 inhabitants. Out of that, 794,165 belonged to IPTV – 18.8% of total subscriber base at the end of 2009. Mobile TV ended 2009 with 346,528 clients in Spain.
Satellite continued to be the favourite media for pay-TV although cable ran it close with some 400,000 fewer clients.
