Now TV wins United TV deal

Hong Kong quadruple-play operator PCCW will broadcast Manchester United’s television channel exclusively in the territory for the next three years, after becoming the top soccer club’s “Official Broadcast Partner” – the first such arrangement in the territory.
PCCW’s platform Now TV has won exclusive broadcasting rights for MUTV, MUTV Online and MU Mobile. These will be available on the IPTV platform, as well as www.now.com.hk, PCCW mobile and WiFi portable infotainment device PCCW eye2.
MUTV is a 24-hour linear channel that offers a range of football and club-related programmes and matches. The channel will be airing recorded, full coverage of Manchester United matches in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League plus live coverage of Manchester United 2010 pre-season friendly matches in North America and Ireland.
The channel will also show match highlights, match day build-up, exclusive interviews, club news, player access, classic matches and numerous magazine and documentaries programmes. MUTV programmes will also be available on-demand online.
Last November, Now TV’s rival i-Cable won the key Premier League soccer rights back from PCCW after a gap of four years. That deal represented a big loss for the IPTV operation. Cable TV will screen the league for three seasons from 2010/11 to the end of the 2013 season – the same timeframe as Now TV’s MUTV deal.
Alex Arena, PCCW's Group Managing Director, said; "We are very proud to cement this relationship with Manchester United, which stands for passion, prestige and the best of football. The Red Devils have amassed a huge following in Hong Kong and the partnership resonates with our determination to offer the best to our customers."
David Gill, CEO of Manchester United, said: "The Club has a fantastic following in Hong Kong and this new partnership is a very exciting development for them. Through it, we can offer a total experience for our supporters working with a first class broadcaster and new media company in PCCW. This partnership is a benchmark by which fans all around the world will measure their media companies."
Now TV will charge HK$50 (US$6.42) a month for the service, together with the MUTV online on-demand offering.
