European court green lights FTV funding
Pascale Paoli Lebailly
The European Court of Justice has rejected TF1 and M6’s complaint over the French State funding public service broadcsater France Télévisions to the tune of €150m.
This financial aid has been judged compatible with the European right as its purpose was to cover the cost of a public service and not to subsidise the group’s commercial activities.
Extra state funding was granted after the announcement of the partial public service broadcasting ad ban in January 2008. The European Commission had also formerly greenlighted the process but France TV’s private competitors had decided to test the matter in the courts.
